Neighborhood social app Nextdoor is unveiling a refreshed version of its service, dubbed the “new Nextdoor.” This revamp introduces features like local news, real-time alerts, and an AI-driven tool called “Faves” for discovering nearby businesses and hotspots. The app now boasts a more modern design.
For 15 years, Nextdoor has been a go-to platform for neighborhood discussions, helping users with recommendations for services and dining spots. However, it hit a roadblock when engagement declined, partly due to associations with misinformation and other issues.
Determined to revitalize the user experience, Nextdoor aims to become more helpful and timely. By enhancing local information, the company seeks to attract more users. Collaborating with 3,500 local publications in the U.S., U.K., and Canada, the app now integrates news from notable sources like the San Francisco Standard and The Toronto Star.
Previously relying solely on user-generated content, Nextdoor now allows these third-party publishers to distribute news directly on the platform. The news feature includes headlines and snippets, with discussions enabled in a comments section under each post.
This change is the beginning of a broader strategy to incorporate content from small businesses, schools, and organizations in the future.
The app also introduces live alerts for weather, traffic, power outages, and more. These updates appear on a neighborhood map, fostering timely conversations about safety. Partnering with Samdesk and Weather.com, Nextdoor ensures these notifications are hyper-localized.
These alerts, categorized by urgency, are designed to prioritize critical information, sidelining less urgent topics when necessary.
With the launch of “Faves,” Nextdoor emphasizes value in neighbor recommendations over generic online searches. This feature offers curated recommendations and allows users to ask questions about local spots.
Powered by neighborhood conversations from the past 15 years, this tool provides localized AI-driven responses. It suggests personalized recommendations based on user experiences unique to each neighborhood.
Nextdoor prides itself on capturing local word-of-mouth insights that larger platforms can’t replicate. The goal is to be seen not just as a social network, but as a utility-centric platform that thrives on hyperlocal connections and information sharing.
