A new tactical, team-based World War I shooter is quickly making its mark on Steam. Over The Top: WWI officially launched on March 6 after more than a year of public playtesting, and it’s already climbing the charts thanks to a steadily rising concurrent player count and a wave of positive community feedback.
Made by Flying Squirrel Entertainment, Over The Top: WWI is built around huge 100 vs. 100 PvP battles on realistic WWI-era maps where survival is less about twitch reflexes and more about smart positioning, coordinated pushes, and disciplined teamwork. With 200 players sharing a single battlefield, matches can feel like full-scale frontline warfare, where a well-timed flank or a carefully placed trench line matters as much as landing shots.
The game’s biggest hook is its battlefield-shaping “Total Annihilation” system. Instead of treating the map like a static arena, Over The Top: WWI lets players physically alter the terrain during the match. Engineers can use shovels and pickaxes to dig zig-zagging trenches that break sightlines and create safer routes forward. Meanwhile, heavy artillery doesn’t just look dramatic—it leaves permanent craters that can become new cover, changing how both teams move and fight as the battle evolves.
Combat is deliberately paced, featuring more than 50 historical weapons such as rifles, mortars, and heavy cannons. Players can select from eight roles, and officers become essential to keeping an assault organized. They can call in tools like poison gas, smoke screens, and creeping barrages to pressure enemy defenses or protect teammates during a push. Friendly fire is enabled, adding real risk to every explosive decision and forcing leaders to think twice before dropping fire support near their own lines.
At launch, the shooter includes 12 historically inspired battlefields and supports custom servers with adjustable maps, rules, and settings—an option that often helps multiplayer games build long-term communities.
Early reception has been strong. Since release, Over The Top: WWI has collected around 2,200 Steam reviews, with roughly 91% marked positive. It has also been trending on Steam, landing on the New & Trending chart and reaching a peak concurrent player count of 5,523. Players frequently praise the destructible terrain and satisfying gunplay, while some criticism points to battles feeling repetitive over time and respawns happening quickly enough to encourage riskier, less tactical play.
Over The Top: WWI launched with a list price of $19.14, and it’s currently available for $16.26 thanks to a 15% launch discount. Full audio is available in English, with interface support for 17 additional languages.
