Netflix Reports Tripled Game Engagement in 2023

According to the latest financial disclosure for the fourth quarter of 2023, Netflix has seen a significant rise in user engagement with its games. Although still comprising a smaller part of the platform in comparison to its movies and series, the streaming giant has experienced gaming engagement multiply threefold over the past year. Netflix specifically highlighted the success of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy that debuted on the streaming service in November 2023, which notched up the highest number of installs and engagement among all game launches. Moreover, there have been cases of subscribers joining Netflix primarily for these game titles.

“While it’s still early days for our games offering, engagement tripled last year — and despite games still being small, and certainly not yet material relative to our film and series business, we’re pleased with this progress. For example, in Q4, we debuted the Grand Theft Auto trilogy from Rockstar Games. This has become our most successful launch to date in terms of installs and engagement, with some consumers clearly signing up simply to play these games,” reported Netflix.

Recently, Netflix also disclosed that they currently host 86 games on their platform and are in the process of developing an additional 90 titles, showcasing a strong commitment to expanding into the gaming sector. Discussions within the company have even touched on monetizing this segment through in-app purchases, ads, and premium pricing for more sophisticated gaming experiences. In a move that may affect the affordability of their service, Netflix has announced plans to phase out its Basic ad-free subscription option starting Q2 2024, which has been known as the most economical tier available to users.
