Nest Protect Transitions to the Google Home Platform

In an exciting development for tech enthusiasts, Google’s Nest app is nearing its end as Google Home takes over the reins. The latest shift sees the Nest Protect smoke and CO alarm moving to Google Home, marking the completion of Google’s transition. With this move, users no longer need to juggle between apps for alerts or managing connected devices. Now, all features of Nest devices and compatible third-party gadgets are accessible through a single platform—the Google Home app.

This update is currently available to Android users enrolled in the Public Preview program, with iOS support expected to follow soon. According to a blog post from Google’s Nest team, users who integrate their Nest Protect smoke alarms can enjoy a range of benefits. These include receiving real-time status alerts, emergency notifications, performing safety checks, executing automatic sound tests, and viewing live camera feeds when smoke or carbon monoxide is detected. Additionally, Nest Aware subscribers in the US can quickly contact emergency services through the app.

Moreover, Google is rolling out enhanced features for Matter-compatible smart locks in the Home app. These new features enrich password management, allowing home managers to control access, update passcodes, and manage guest profiles with specific labels like “dog walker” or “landscaper.” Public Preview users can utilize features like one-tap lock/unlock, time-bound auto relock, and a “Vacation mode” to temporarily disable keypad entry. Although these added features are initially for Android users in the Public Preview, iOS users can expect support by early 2025.

It’s worth noting that not all Matter-compatible smart locks will have access to these advanced features, but Google specifically highlights the Nest × Yale lock.

As technology continues to evolve, it opens up new possibilities and conveniences for smart home management, making everyday tasks easier and more secure. Keep an eye out for more updates as Google continues to refine the Google Home app experience.
