NAND Storage Now Tops iPhone 18 Pro Max 1TB Costs, Surpassing $250 Per Device

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max could become one of the clearest examples yet of how sharply rising memory prices are reshaping the smartphone industry. The surge in DRAM and NAND flash costs has become so dramatic that even Apple CEO Tim Cook recently acknowledged he has “never seen anything like this in over 40 years.”

That statement may sound striking on its own, but the real impact becomes much easier to understand when looking at the expected bill of materials for Apple’s upcoming flagship. Based on current estimates, memory and storage are no longer minor cost items. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, they could account for nearly half of the total component cost in some configurations.

Apple is reportedly facing a much higher production cost for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with the total bill of materials expected to rise by around $300 compared with the previous generation. However, the retail price is only expected to increase by about $200. If that happens, Apple may absorb part of the cost increase itself, resulting in tighter profit margins.

The shift is especially noticeable when compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. In 2025, memory and storage reportedly represented only about 9 percent of the bill of materials for the 256GB iPhone 17 Pro. For the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro, estimates suggest that DRAM and NAND could jump to roughly 27 percent of the total component cost.

The picture becomes even more dramatic with the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max. Current bill of materials estimates suggest NAND storage alone could cost more than $250 per device. That figure is significant because it is close to half of what the entire iPhone 17 Pro Max reportedly cost to build from a component standpoint.

When DRAM and NAND are combined, the memory-related cost for the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max could reach around $400. That aligns with recent pricing trends in the memory market, where contract prices for 12GB LPDDR5X RAM modules have reportedly climbed to around $145 per unit.

Apple may be able to soften the impact by reducing costs in other areas, including display panels and other components. Even so, those savings are not expected to fully cancel out the massive increase in memory and storage pricing. As a result, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could become more expensive to produce while not increasing in retail price enough to fully protect Apple’s margins.

This cost pressure may also affect Apple’s hardware choices. With DRAM pricing already extremely high, the chances of Apple moving the iPhone 18 Pro models to LPDDR6 RAM appear lower. Sticking with LPDDR5X could be a more practical option if the company wants to control production costs while still delivering strong performance.

For consumers, the key takeaway is simple: the next generation of premium smartphones may become more expensive not because of major design changes, but because memory and storage prices are rising at an extraordinary pace. The iPhone 18 Pro Max may still bring the usual performance, camera, and efficiency improvements expected from Apple’s flagship lineup, but behind the scenes, its cost structure could look very different from previous models.

If these estimates prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will highlight a major challenge facing the tech industry in 2026: advanced smartphones are becoming increasingly dependent on expensive memory components, and even Apple is not immune to the pressure.
