Murata Bets ¥1 Trillion on Asia-Wide MLCC Production Expansion

Murata to Invest $6.3 Billion in MLCC Production as AI and Data Center Demand Surges

Murata Manufacturing is preparing for a major expansion in multilayer ceramic capacitor production, committing around JPY1 trillion, or approximately US$6.3 billion, to increase MLCC capacity by 2030. The move comes as global demand for high-performance electronic components continues to rise, driven largely by rapid growth in artificial intelligence infrastructure, cloud computing, and large-scale data centers.

MLCCs may be tiny, but they play an essential role in modern electronics. These components help regulate and stabilize power flow inside electronic devices, ensuring that processors, memory, networking chips, and other critical parts receive consistent and reliable power. As AI systems become more powerful and data centers grow more energy-intensive, the need for dependable power management components has increased sharply.

The expansion highlights how AI is reshaping the semiconductor and electronics supply chain beyond just advanced chips. While processors and accelerators often receive the most attention, supporting components such as capacitors are equally important for building reliable high-performance systems. Every AI server can require large numbers of MLCCs to manage voltage, reduce electrical noise, and support stable operation under heavy workloads.

Murata’s planned investment reflects confidence in long-term demand from industries that rely on increasingly complex electronics. Data centers are expanding worldwide to support generative AI, cloud services, enterprise computing, and real-time digital platforms. These facilities require massive amounts of computing hardware, and each system depends on power components that can handle fast switching, high density, and continuous operation.

Beyond data centers, MLCC demand is also supported by growth in electric vehicles, 5G networks, industrial automation, consumer electronics, and advanced medical devices. As more products become connected, computerized, and power-efficient, the number of capacitors used in each device continues to rise. This trend has made MLCCs one of the most important building blocks in the global electronics market.

By investing heavily through 2030, Murata aims to strengthen its ability to meet future orders and maintain a stable supply for customers in fast-growing technology sectors. Capacity expansion is especially important at a time when manufacturers are seeking more resilient supply chains following years of component shortages and fluctuating demand.

The planned JPY1 trillion investment also signals that demand for AI-related infrastructure is expected to remain strong over the coming years. As companies build larger AI models and deploy more powerful computing clusters, the hardware behind those systems will require increasingly sophisticated power management solutions. MLCC makers are positioned to benefit from this shift as demand moves from traditional electronics into high-value infrastructure applications.

Murata’s expansion strategy places MLCCs in the spotlight as a critical component of the AI era. Though small in size, these capacitors are vital to the performance, efficiency, and reliability of next-generation computing systems. With data centers and AI applications pushing electronic hardware to new limits, Murata’s multibillion-dollar investment underscores just how important power management technology has become to the future of computing.
