Mudita Kompakt: The Sleek E Ink Phone Merging Minimalism with Privacy on Android

Introducing the Mudita Kompakt, a new entrant in the world of minimalist phones, designed to simplify our tech-driven lives with its E Ink display and a suite of essential applications. This phone, developed by Mudita—a company founded by Michał Kiciński, co-founder of the studio behind blockbuster games like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077—offers a unique blend of simplicity and privacy.

The Mudita Kompakt is a refreshing shift from the ubiquitous smartphones packed with apps you might never use. It operates on MuditaOS K, crafted around the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), featuring only what you need: phone and SMS apps, an E-reader, Notes, offline Maps, a Calculator, Recorder, Audio Player, Weather, and Meditation—sans any Google services. Its interface is intentionally straightforward with easily discernible icons and capacitive navigation buttons, recalling the smartphone designs prior to bezel-free screens and elongated aspect ratios.

Built with a reinforced metal frame encased in a plastic exterior, the Kompakt carries an IP54 rating for resistance against dust and splashes. Its 4.3-inch E Ink display delivers a resolution of 800 x 480, which, although not as sharp as the modern eReaders, is ample for its intended purpose.

Under the hood, the Mudita Kompakt runs on a MediaTek MT6761 processor, supported by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. The phone features an 8MP rear camera equipped with a dual-color flash, though it doesn’t record video or have a front camera. A standout feature is its privacy switch—situated on the left side—that shifts the device into Offline+ Mode, disabling all communication features and even the camera and microphones, giving users peace of mind.

Connectivity-wise, the Kompakt offers a fingerprint scanner, an ACC speaker, an audio jack, Bluetooth 5.x, NFC, GPS, LTE, as well as dual SIM capabilities via a nano and eSIM, alongside a hybrid slot for an extra SIM or microSD card. It’s fueled by a 3,000mAh battery, promising up to 6 days on standby and supporting both USB-C and wireless charging options, although the charging speed remains undisclosed.

Mudita commits to ensuring that the Kompakt stays up-to-date with regular software and security updates extended for a minimum of three years from the last sale. Updates can be installed over-the-air or via the Mudita Center, a desktop app compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux, which also serves as a backup tool.

The Kompakt is set to arrive in two versions: a global edition available in April 2025 for Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and a North American version rolling out in May 2025, fine-tuned for the U.S. and Canadian markets but compatible elsewhere too. Buyers can choose from Charcoal Black, Pebble Gray, and Natural White color options.

Despite already surpassing its Kickstarter goal, the Mudita Kompakt has sparked considerable interest, set to retail at €439 (approximately $476/£252). However, early backers can snag it for a reduced price, making it an attractive minimalist choice for those seeking to pare back the distractions in their digital lives.
