Modern QD-OLED gaming monitors generally hold up well against burn-in, as shown by Monitors Unboxed’s recent tests. They specifically examined MSI’s 4K QD-OLED monitor to understand its resilience to image burn-in from static applications over prolonged use.
OLED panels are known for their vivid display quality, but they have a vulnerability: image burn-in. This is particularly true when static images are involved, a challenge most manufacturers tackle with advanced burn-in protection technologies to extend the lifespan of their products. Monitors Unboxed put this to the test by subjecting the MSI MPG 321URX to rigorous conditions over 15 months.
The test involved using mostly static apps on the monitor at a brightness of 200 nits, with Windows 11 in light mode and a dark taskbar, running eight hours a day, every day. Initial results showed no visible burn-in for the first couple of months. It wasn’t until around six months that subtle signs began to appear, although they weren’t immediately apparent.
Specifically, the monitor’s dark taskbar revealed faint burn-in, and a more pronounced mark appeared along the middle line where an application had been consistently snapped to the screen’s right side. After nine to twelve months, the burn-in effects became slightly more noticeable and were clearly visible after fifteen months under these intensive testing conditions. However, these marks were only intrusive under certain color displays or when using enhanced filters to highlight the changes.
The outcome highlights a cumulative effect, where burn-in develops gradually, significantly under static use for extended periods. Even in this worst-case scenario, Monitors Unboxed suggests the QD-OLED MSI monitor could last up to three years, a bit shorter than traditional LCDs. Yet, thanks to built-in OLED protection features, the impact of burn-in is anticipated to be less evident.
For gamers, dynamic visuals minimize concerns about burn-in, but content creators using software like Adobe Premiere Pro might find these monitors suitable for about two to three years before noticeable image deterioration.
