Model Y to Miss Out on Tesla’s UWB Phone Key Enhancements for Now

Tesla’s Model Y, despite being the world’s most popular electric vehicle, is currently unable to utilize the latest Ultra-wideband (UWB) Phone Key technology to unlock the vehicle. This feature allows for a more responsive and reliable connection compared to traditional Bluetooth.

The UWB Phone Key functionality is part of Tesla’s latest 2024.2.3 software update which promises enhanced accuracy for locking, unlocking, and managing automatic doors. Vehicle owners can activate this feature through the Tesla app, provided they have an iPhone 11 or later model, alongside the required Tesla app version.

Bluetooth has been the standard connectivity for Tesla’s Phone Key, but it has faced criticism for being slow and unreliable, with many users reporting difficulties in unlocking their vehicles. This has led to a high volume of online searches for solutions to connectivity issues.

As Tesla continues to enhance its technology, it has reserved the new UWB Phone Key feature for a select number of models. Currently, the UWB feature is exclusive to vehicles like the new Model 3 Highland and the 2023 Model X. Future implementations of UWB technology are expected in other Tesla models, such as the latest Model S refresh and the upcoming Cybertruck.

Owners of the Model Y, however, will have to wait until Tesla releases the Juniper facelift in the near future. Until that point, Model Y owners will continue to rely on Bluetooth for the Phone Key feature, which could mean ongoing connectivity challenges.

For those with compatible Tesla models and supported iPhones, setting up the UWB Phone Key is a seamless process. By adding their Tesla to the Nearby Interactions in the iPhone settings and selecting the Phone Key upgrade within the app, they can benefit from an enhanced, hands-free experience.

For Tesla owners interested in further enhancing their vehicle integration at home, the 80A Tesla Gen 2 Wall Connector with a 24-foot cable is available for purchase on Amazon, ensuring EV charging is as convenient and efficient as the rest of the Tesla ecosystem.
