Windows 11 runs best with more memory, but rising DRAM prices and a growing RAM shortage are changing the conversation. Microsoft previously suggested that 32GB of RAM was ideal for serious users and gamers, especially those playing demanding titles or using heavy mods. That guidance has now disappeared from Microsoft’s official learning material, signaling a quieter but important shift in messaging.

Instead of pushing users toward larger and more expensive memory upgrades, Microsoft now appears to be focusing on something far more important for everyday PC owners: making Windows 11 more memory-efficient.

The removed guidance reportedly stated that 16GB of RAM is enough for most games, while 32GB is ideal for serious players who run demanding games or use extensive modifications. Microsoft also recommended a 1TB SSD for users with large game libraries. Under normal market conditions, those recommendations would make sense for gamers, creators, and power users. But with RAM and SSD prices climbing, upgrading a PC is no longer a simple or affordable choice for many people.

That makes Windows 11 optimization more important than ever.

Many Windows 11 laptops and desktops still ship with 8GB of RAM, including base configurations of Microsoft’s own Surface Pro devices. Since 8GB systems are likely to remain common for the next few years, Microsoft has a strong reason to improve how Windows 11 handles memory. Millions of users rely on affordable laptops for work, school, browsing, streaming, and light productivity, and they should not need premium hardware just to get a smooth everyday experience.

The issue is that Windows 11 can consume a large amount of RAM even before users open apps. In one example, a Windows 11 PC with 32GB of memory was already using around 7.8GB with no browser or program running. While some of that memory may be cached and can be released when needed, the number still highlights why users with 8GB systems can feel limited quickly.

The situation can be even more noticeable on compact laptops. Some 8GB machines reportedly use most of their available memory immediately after startup, leaving less room for web browsers, office apps, background tools, games, and creative software. For users who keep multiple browser tabs open or run communication apps while working, this can lead to slower performance, stutters, or more frequent swapping to storage.

The good news is that Microsoft is aware of the issue. Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s President of Windows and Devices, has confirmed that Windows 11 will become more memory-efficient in the future. That statement should be encouraging for anyone using a lower-RAM PC, especially as upgrading memory is becoming more expensive.

Better RAM optimization could make a major difference across the Windows ecosystem. If Microsoft reduces background memory usage, improves resource management, and streamlines system processes, Windows 11 could feel faster on existing hardware without requiring users to buy new laptops or upgrade to 16GB or 32GB of RAM. This would be especially valuable for budget PCs, thin-and-light notebooks, tablets, and entry-level desktops.

For now, users with 8GB of RAM should be mindful of how they use their systems. Closing unused browser tabs, limiting startup apps, uninstalling unnecessary background software, and keeping Windows updated can help reduce memory pressure. Choosing lighter apps where possible can also improve responsiveness.

Users who already have 16GB of RAM are in a better position for gaming, multitasking, and productivity. Meanwhile, 32GB remains useful for heavy workloads such as video editing, large creative projects, software development, virtual machines, demanding games, and modded titles. However, with memory prices rising, 32GB is no longer an easy recommendation for everyone.

That is why Microsoft’s next move matters. Windows 11 should not depend on large amounts of RAM just to feel smooth. If the company can deliver meaningful memory improvements, it could extend the life of millions of PCs and make the operating system more practical during a difficult period for hardware pricing.

The message is clear: more RAM will always help, but better optimization is now the priority. For Windows 11 users, especially those on 8GB laptops, Microsoft’s promise of improved memory efficiency could become one of the most important updates to the operating system in the near future.
