Microsoft in Negotiations to Acquire TikTok, Says Trump

Donald Trump recently revealed to reporters that Microsoft is engaged in discussions to acquire TikTok’s U.S. operations. While he didn’t provide extensive details, Trump did highlight the significant interest surrounding TikTok, suggesting that numerous parties are keen on bidding for the popular app.

Back in 2020, the situation was similar when Microsoft and Oracle emerged as strong contenders to take over TikTok from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. This came after Trump put pressure on the app to reduce its Chinese ties or risk being banned in the United States.

Last week, Trump signed an executive order that postponed the TikTok ban for an additional 75 days and instructed the Department of Justice to hold off on enforcing any penalties associated with the ban. While TikTok has resumed operations, it remains unavailable in app stores.

Interestingly, Perplexity AI has proposed a merger with TikTok, while billionaire Frank McCourt has entered the race with a formal offer to purchase the app. Trump himself has expressed openness to the idea of notable figures like Tesla CEO Elon Musk or Oracle chairman Larry Ellison stepping in as new owners for TikTok.

As the situation unfolds, the fate of TikTok’s U.S. operations hangs in the balance, with a range of high-profile individuals and companies vying for a piece of this digital phenomenon. The outcome will not only shape the future of TikTok but could also have broader implications for the tech industry and international business relations.
