Microsoft DirectSR Integrates Advanced AMD FSR 3.1 Upscaling Technology

Microsoft has rolled out an exciting update to its DirectSR technology, bringing AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) from version 2.2 to 3.1. This enhancement focuses on the upscaling capabilities of DirectSR, meant to elevate the gaming experience by providing sharper, high-quality visuals without relying on full hardware resources. While the full capabilities of FSR, including frame generation, aren’t part of this update, the upscaling feature alone promises to significantly enhance visual performance.

Previously, when first introduced, DirectSR supported multiple technologies, including Intel’s XeSS and NVIDIA’s DLSS, setting a standardized approach for super resolution in D3D12 games. Now with the upgrade to FSR 3.1, Microsoft continues its commitment to refining how games look without taxing the GPU excessively.

Despite these promising updates, DirectSR hasn’t been widely discussed or adopted in the gaming community yet. This might be due to the strong individual focus of GPU manufacturers on their proprietary solutions, preferring tailored optimizations with developers directly instead of using a universal platform like DirectSR. Additionally, frame generation technology, a major boost for gaming performance, is overshadowed by current implementations, placing DirectSR’s focus on solely upscaling.

For developers eager to test this new capability, Microsoft recommends updating their drivers to utilize the DirectSR update, included in the latest Agility SDK 1.715-1 preview. However, it might take some time before gamers can directly experience these upgrades in their favorite titles. As the gaming industry evolves, it will be interesting to see if DirectSR finds its momentum or paves the way for integrated solutions in the future.
