Micron Launches World's First High Capacity 60 TB Data Center SSD, ION 6550 With E3.S Form Factor, Gen5 Ready & 20W 1

Micron Unveils Groundbreaking 60TB Data Center SSD: ION 6550 with E3.S Form Factor and Gen5 Compatibility

Micron has introduced a groundbreaking innovation in the world of data storage with its latest release, the ION 6550 solid-state drive (SSD). This top-tier storage solution offers a hefty 60 terabytes of storage space and employs PCI-E Gen 5.0 technology to deliver remarkable speed and efficiency, all while consuming a mere 20 watts of power.

What sets the ION 6550 apart is its pioneering use of the E3.S form factor, which currently makes it the only SSD to boast such a large capacity for data centers. This advancement not only maximizes storage capacity but also enhances power efficiency, achieving an impressive 179% increase in sequential read speeds compared to its predecessor, the ION 6500 SSD.

Micron’s announcement highlighted several standout features of the ION 6550. It provides significant improvements over previous generations in terms of power consumption and performance. The device can deliver a remarkable increase in read bandwidth per watt, sequential write speed, random read speed, and read IOPS per watt, touting a 20% improvement in energy efficiency.

Alvaro Toledo, the vice president and general manager of Micron’s Data Center Storage Group, shared his enthusiasm for this advancement. He emphasized that the SSD not only meets but exceeds the ever-growing demands for storage capacity and energy efficiency required by AI workloads and other data-intensive processes.

In direct comparison with competing 60 TB SSDs, the ION 6550 stands out by offering 147% better performance for NVIDIA Magnum IO GPUDirect Storage and higher efficiencies across several testing metrics. Additionally, its ability to fully write in 3.4 hours, which is 150% faster than competitors, makes it particularly appealing for time-sensitive applications.

The SSD comes in multiple form factors, such as E1.L, U.2, and E3.S, which significantly reduces the physical space required—by up to 67%. This compact design allows data centers to maximize their storage capacity, reaching up to 44.2 petabytes within a single rack when using a high-density configuration.

With such a powerful tool at their disposal, data centers can expect to see a reduction in operating costs, a streamlined footprint, and enhanced scalability to accommodate AI and Big Data processing. Raghu Nambiar, Corporate Vice President of Data Center Ecosystems and Solutions at AMD, praised the ION 6550 as a revolutionary product that supports evolving infrastructure needs by offering dense and energy-efficient solutions.

The ION 6550 also places a strong emphasis on security, featuring SPDM 1.2 for attestation and SHA-512 for secure signature generation. These security measures are crucial for industries handling sensitive data, such as finance, healthcare, and AI research.

For those looking to optimize their data centers with robust, energy-efficient storage solutions, the Micron ION 6550 presents an exciting step forward, setting a new benchmark for high-capacity SSDs in data center environments.
