Micron Technology, a leading provider of memory and storage solutions, has announced the introduction of what is currently the world’s smallest UFS (Universal Flash Storage) package. This extremely compact UFS 4.0 chip has dimensions of just 9×13mm, setting new standards for the form factor of memory chips.
Micron Aims to Enhance AI Performance with its New UFS 4.0 Chip
Announced at the prestigious Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, Micron’s new UFS 4.0 storage chip is designed using the company’s innovative 232-layer 3D NAND technology. It promises exceptional sequential read speeds reaching 4,300 MB/s and write speeds of 4,000 MB/s, which is double the performance of Micron’s previous 176-layer UFS 3.1 NAND technology. Additionally, this chip offers a 25% improvement in energy efficiency compared to its predecessors.
Micron highlights the chip’s benefit in accelerating the loading times for large language models within generative AI applications, promising a 40% faster load time to improve user experiences when engaging with AI-based tools. “Micron UFS 4.0 raises the bar for mobile storage with enhanced performance, flexibility, and scalability to accelerate the rollout of generative AI-capable smartphones,” stated Mark Montierth, a General Manager at Micron.
This new solution from Micron follows their first UFS 4.0 release last June, which featured similar dimensions to Samsung’s initial UFS 4.0 offering but with superior performance. With no increase in speed, Micron’s latest endeavor has focused on minimizing the size to allow more internal space for other device components, like larger battery capacities. The company emphasizes that this reduction in size is crucial for the development of future foldable and ultra-slim smartphone designs, while the enhanced power efficiency will contribute to longer battery life.
Beyond the physical advancements, Micron’s UFS 4.0 storage chips are equipped with exclusive technologies for bolstered performance. The High-Performance Mode (HPM) is designed to optimize device operations during intense usage periods, offering priority to essential tasks and thereby yielding a performance uplift of over 25%. Furthermore, the One Button Refresh (OBR) feature promises to facilitate 10% faster application launches through its automatic data cleaning and optimization.
Sampling Stage Underway for Micron’s New UFS 4.0 Chip
Micron is offering the new UFS 4.0 storage chip in various capacities, with options including 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. As of now, the company has initiated the sampling process with select clients, although the exact timing for the commercial availability of this product remains unspecified. This latest storage solution is targeted at the upcoming lineup of high-end Android smartphones, focusing on manufacturers looking to push the envelope in mobile technology.
