Metro 2039 Descends Back Into Moscow’s Tunnels With a New Hero

Metro 2039 brings the post-apocalyptic shooter series back to the Moscow tunnels in February 2027, with 4A Games and Deep Silver preparing a darker, more personal chapter for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Set four years after the events of Metro Exodus, Metro 2039 marks the fourth mainline entry in the atmospheric first-person shooter franchise inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels. After taking players beyond the Metro in the previous game, the new installment returns to the claustrophobic underground world beneath Moscow, where survival is still measured in bullets, filters, silence, and fear.

This time, longtime protagonist Artyom is no longer the central character. Players will step into the role of the Stranger, a reclusive figure who once escaped the Metro and vowed never to go back. Haunted by brutal nightmares and a violent past, he is pulled back into the darkness he tried to leave behind.

The Stranger also represents a major shift for the series: he is the first fully voiced protagonist in a mainline Metro game. According to 4A Games, this change is intended to create a stronger emotional connection between the player and the character, allowing his inner conflict, fear, and trauma to become a bigger part of the storytelling.

The Metro he returns to is not the same fractured underground society fans remember. The once-divided station communities have been united under the Novoreich, an authoritarian regime led by Hunter, a former Spartan Order officer who now rules through propaganda, misinformation, military power, and fear. His rise reshapes the Metro into a more oppressive and dangerous place, where enemies are not limited to mutants lurking in the dark.

Players can expect the signature Metro gameplay formula to return, blending stealth, tactical combat, scavenged weapons, limited resources, and tense exploration. Ammunition, gas mask filters, and supplies are expected to remain critical to survival, forcing players to make difficult choices while navigating hostile tunnels, occupied stations, and the frozen surface.

Metro 2039 is also being shaped by real-world events. 4A Games has developed the title across its Kyiv and Malta studios, and Creative Director Andriy Shevchenko has said that the war in Ukraine influenced the game’s darker tone. Themes of tyranny, resistance, survival, and the human cost of conflict are expected to play a major role in the narrative.

Dmitry Glukhovsky has returned to collaborate on the script, helping preserve the bleak, philosophical tone that made the Metro universe stand out. While Metro 2039 tells a new story that moves beyond the original books, its focus on political control, moral compromise, and life under oppression keeps it closely tied to the spirit of the novels.

On the technical side, Metro 2039 runs on an upgraded version of 4A Games’ proprietary 4A Engine, built for modern consoles and high-end PCs. The game will feature real-time ray-traced global illumination, improved specular reflections, and dynamic weather during surface sections, aiming to make both the underground tunnels and the ruined world above feel more immersive than ever.

Level design is also returning to a familiar balance. Metro 2039 will mix tight, atmospheric tunnel routes with larger station hubs, giving players room to explore while keeping the series’ trademark tension intact. Environmental storytelling remains a major focus, with 4A Games using detailed scenes, abandoned rooms, and carefully placed objects to reveal what happened to the people who once lived there.

Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch in February 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through major digital storefronts. With a new protagonist, a more oppressive Moscow Metro, upgraded technology, and a story shaped by themes of resistance and survival, the next Metro game looks set to deliver one of the series’ most intense and emotionally charged journeys yet.
