A UPS logistics center in Winnipeg, Canada, became the site of a significant theft operation when an employee pilfered a staggering 866 Apple products amounting to a value of C$1.3 million. The theft took place over a period stretching from September 2023 to January 2024.
Orville Martirez Beltrano, a 30-year-old Canadian man, was the employee at the heart of this audacious scheme. Beltrano had been part of the UPS team since 2013 and recently held the position of a local sorting manager before his illicit activities led to his dismissal and eventual arrest.
The modus operandi involved selling the stolen Apple products on the online classified platform Kijiji. Although these items were sold at lower-than-market prices, the total proceeds Beltrano managed to transfer to his bank account summed up to C$232,000. These funds were used to finance his lifestyle, including repaying a loan for a white Audi he bought for C$60,000 in 2021 and contributing towards the purchase of a house that cost C$630,000.
Upon searching Martirez’s car, law enforcement officials discovered cash amounting to C$9,000 and jewelry valued at C$9,100, providing tangible evidence of his criminal enterprise.
The legal ramifications for Martirez could involve the forfeiture of his assets, including his house, car, cash, and jewelry, which might be used to compensate UPS for the significant losses incurred. The prompt confession by Martirez to the theft and sale of the Apple products might lead to a swift conclusion of the case.
While UPS maintains a low package loss rate of less than 1%, incidents such as this highlight the potential vulnerabilities within logistics operations that can lead to substantial losses when exploited.
As online marketplaces continue to flourish, it serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant when purchasing items from platforms where the origin of products could be questionable. Furthermore, businesses must constantly assess and improve their security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
This theft also emphasizes the importance of effective internal controls and surveillance within logistics and supply chain management. Employers are also reminded to conduct thorough background checks and monitor employees who have access to high-value inventory.
