WeTransfer’s file transfer service is widely used by creatives for sharing large files, but its expiry date feature has been a source of frustration. Forgetting to download files before a link expires means you may have to request the files to be sent again, an inconvenience for both sender and receiver.
In response to this challenge, WeTransfer has introduced a feature that allows users to adjust the expiry date of the files they receive. Through the ‘Save for Now’ option found in the WeTransfer mobile app, recipients can now take action to extend the validity of a download link, though how much you can extend it by varies depending on the type of account you have.
The ‘Save for Now’ feature has been implemented to help users who receive files but are not able to download them right away. With this feature, you can essentially bookmark the files into a dedicated folder within the WeTransfer app, ensuring you don’t lose access to important files buried in your email.
Nonetheless, the initial announcement from WeTransfer caused some confusion among its user base. It suggested that WeTransfer links would no longer expire, which isn’t entirely accurate. Even with the new feature, users still need to take affirmative steps to ensure their links remain active.
During our evaluation, we discovered that with a free WeTransfer account, the ‘Save for Now’ feature allows users to delay a link’s expiry date by up to seven days, a modest increase from the default three-day lifespan of a transfer link. Specifics about how long paid account plans can extend their links is not immediately clear, and we’re looking forward to receiving clarification from WeTransfer about these limits.
This move comes on the heels of WeTransfer’s acquisition by Italy-based Bending Spoons, a developer known for its suite of applications that include Evernote and Meetup. Following over ten years on the market, Alexandar Vassilev, CEO of WeTransfer, highlighted the platform’s growth to 600,000 subscribers and 80 million monthly active users. This new feature demonstrates WeTransfer’s commitment to refining its service for its large and varied user base.
