Mafia: Definitive Edition PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Release Hinted by New ESRB Rating

Mafia: Definitive Edition may be preparing for a return on modern consoles, as a new rating suggests the crime drama remake could soon receive native versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Originally released in 2020, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a full remake of the classic 2002 game Mafia. The title rebuilt the original story with modern visuals, updated gameplay, improved voice acting, and a more cinematic presentation of the fictional city of Lost Heaven. Until now, the game has been available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with current-generation console owners only able to play it through backward compatibility.

That may be about to change. A newly discovered ESRB rating lists Mafia: Definitive Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, pointing to the possibility that Hangar 13 and 2K Games are preparing a dedicated current-gen release. The rating once again classifies the game as M for Mature, which matches the existing versions due to its intense violence, strong language, mature themes, and crime-focused storyline.

At the moment, neither Hangar 13 nor 2K Games has officially announced Mafia: Definitive Edition for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Because of that, details remain limited. It is not yet known whether the updated versions will include improved resolution, higher frame rates, faster loading times, enhanced textures, DualSense features on PS5, or other technical upgrades designed for modern hardware.

A native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version would make sense for the game, especially as players continue to revisit story-driven open-world titles with upgraded performance. Mafia: Definitive Edition is known for its atmospheric 1930s setting, cinematic storytelling, and focus on organized crime, making it one of the more memorable remakes in recent years.

While an ESRB listing does not always guarantee an immediate release, ratings often appear when a game is nearing launch or when an official announcement is close. If the listing is accurate, fans may not have to wait long before 2K Games confirms the new versions.

For now, players interested in Mafia: Definitive Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S should keep an eye out for an official announcement, including potential release dates, upgrade options, pricing, and details on any current-gen improvements.
