Apple’s latest Mac mini refresh is drawing attention for more than just its compact design. The new model, powered by the Apple M6 chip, is being positioned as a serious step forward for Mac gaming, with Apple claiming a major performance leap in one of the most demanding PC titles available: Cyberpunk 2077.

According to Apple’s own performance data, the M6 Mac mini delivers up to twice the gaming performance of the M4 Mac mini in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. That alone is notable, but the more interesting detail is that the test was conducted with ray tracing enabled, a feature known for putting heavy pressure on graphics hardware.

The M6 chip featured in the new Mac mini comes with a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, compared to the M4 model used in Apple’s comparison, which includes a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Both systems were configured with 32GB of unified memory and a 2TB SSD for the test, allowing the benchmark to focus more directly on the generational performance difference between the two chips.

Apple says Cyberpunk 2077 was tested at a 2048 x 1152 resolution using the Ultra graphics preset, MetalFX set to Balanced, and ray tracing turned on. The Mac mini systems were also connected to a 5K display during testing. While Apple’s chart points to a clear two-times improvement over the M4, the company did not disclose the actual frame rate, leaving one of the most important gaming performance details unanswered for now.

That missing frame rate figure will likely become a key point once independent reviews and real-world benchmarks become available. Still, the fact that Apple is openly highlighting Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing suggests growing confidence in the gaming capabilities of Apple Silicon.

For years, Macs have been praised for creative workloads, battery efficiency, and strong CPU performance, but gaming has remained one of the platform’s weaker areas. The M6 Mac mini may not turn the Mac into a dedicated gaming machine overnight, but this early preview suggests Apple is continuing to close the gap.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a particularly useful test because it is one of the most visually demanding modern games. Running it at Ultra settings with ray tracing enabled is a serious challenge for many systems, especially compact desktops. MetalFX, Apple’s upscaling technology, appears to play an important role here by helping balance image quality and performance.

However, there is one area Apple did not appear to test: path tracing. Cyberpunk 2077 supports path tracing on Mac, but that mode is significantly more demanding than standard ray tracing. Even with the M6’s improved GPU, path tracing would likely place a much heavier load on the system, so its absence from Apple’s performance comparison is not surprising.

The new M6 Mac mini is also notable because every configuration appears to include the same 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU setup. Pricing reportedly starts at $899 for the base model. A version with 16GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage is listed at $1,099, while a higher configuration with 24GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD is priced at $1,299.

For users interested in Apple’s smallest desktop, the M6 Mac mini looks like a meaningful upgrade, especially for those who want stronger graphics performance without moving to a larger or more expensive Mac. The combination of a 2nm-class chip design, improved CPU and GPU core counts, unified memory, and MetalFX support could make this one of Apple’s most interesting gaming-focused Mac updates so far.

The big question now is how well the M6 Mac mini performs outside Apple’s controlled testing. Once reviewers begin testing games across different settings, resolutions, and workloads, we should get a clearer picture of how much progress Apple has really made.
