Apple recently unveiled the newly redesigned M4 Mac mini, and one of the first teardowns has been released, revealing the innovative internal changes. Known for its meticulous disassemblies, iFixit delves into what makes this compact powerhouse tick, highlighting its repairability and design improvements.
The M4 Mac mini boasts a significant reduction in size, measuring just 5 by 5 inches, which means its components are more densely packed. This compact design poses challenges for repairability, as tighter spaces can complicate access. Unlike the previous iteration, which had ample internal space, this model features both a revamped outer shell and an advanced thermal design.
Inside, the power supply module’s location mirrors that of the HomePod, positioned at the top of the device. This strategic placement likely contributed to the Mac mini’s size reduction without sacrificing performance. The fan, centrally located, efficiently draws in air, maintaining optimal internal temperatures as heat is expelled from the bottom.
A notable innovation is the thermal solution, which differs from previous Apple devices. Considering the M4 Mac mini’s cooling demands, especially for the M4 Pro variant, a larger copper heatsink has been incorporated to enhance heat dissipation.
The teardown also highlights modular storage, with an upgradable SSD. Apple uses its proprietary SSD, similar to the one in the Mac Studio. However, the M4 and M4 Pro models house different NAND modules, which are not interchangeable, emphasizing the need for users to verify compatibility before upgrading.
While the SSD can be swapped out, the RAM remains soldered to the M4 chip, preventing post-purchase upgrades. This underscores the importance of selecting the right configuration when buying, as RAM cannot be increased later.
iFixit’s 7 out of 10 repairability score for the M4 Mac mini is impressive compared to typical Apple devices. Factors influencing this score include the SSD’s modular nature, ease of component removal, and comprehensive repair manuals. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to explore the M4 Mac mini’s intriguing features.
