Lionsgate Announces Development of Live-Action Outlast Film

Lionsgate is bringing the chills and thrills of the popular horror game series “Outlast” to the big screen. This captivating live-action adaptation will take inspiration from Red Barrels’ intense survival horror games. The project is being crafted by horror aficionado Roy Lee and talented screenwriter J.T. Petty, who has also lent his pen to all three Outlast games, bringing the eerie narrative to life.

While the details of the film are being kept under wraps, it’s expected to follow the lines of a “modestly produced feature” similar to Blumhouse Productions’ spine-tingling rendition of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series and the nerve-wracking SAW movies from Lionsgate itself.

Roy Lee expressed his enthusiasm, recalling how Outlast stormed into the gaming world in 2012, revolutionizing horror gaming with its intense and immersive experience. He noted, “Its deep, emergent lore has provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise. I’m excited to bring this unique world to life for both new viewers and the series’ dedicated fans.”

Since its inception, the Outlast series has captivated over 37 million players globally, with titles like the original 2013 Outlast, its gripping sequel Outlast 2 released in 2017, the 2014 prequel DLC Outlast: Whistleblower, and the recent multiplayer spinoff, The Outlast Trials.

David Chateauneuf, the creative mastermind and co-founder of Red Barrels, shared his excitement about the collaboration. As a devoted fan of horror, he hailed the chance to work alongside legends like Roy Lee and Lionsgate, describing it as a dream, or perhaps more fittingly for the genre, a nightmare come true.

The “Outlast” film promises to preserve the unsettling first-person perspective and explore terrifying themes of manipulation, torture, and the sinister grip of corrupt institutions. Get ready for a cinematic experience that will test your nerves and linger long in your memory.
