Limited Run Games is bringing a surprising piece of retro gaming history back from the deep. The company has announced Jaws: Retro Edition, a physical re-release of the 1987 NES classic Jaws for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Timed to celebrate the movie’s 50th anniversary in 2025, this release is designed to appeal to both nostalgic fans and modern players who want classic gameplay with today’s conveniences.
The original Jaws game was developed by LJN and drew direct inspiration from Steven Spielberg’s iconic horror blockbuster. It put players in the middle of a tense battle against a relentless great white shark, mixing multiple gameplay styles in a way that felt distinctive for its era. You’d cruise the ocean from a top-down perspective, dive into side-scrolling action to hunt with a harpoon, and eventually face off in a dramatic 3D boss encounter that aimed to capture the movie’s escalating dread.
Nearly four decades later, Jaws: Retro Edition isn’t just a simple re-release. Alongside the classic experience, it promises modern enhancements and a significantly expanded take on the concept, with a new mode that pulls inspiration from all four films in the Jaws franchise—going beyond the original focus to create a broader, multi-chapter story.
Two physical editions are planned for both PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The Standard Edition is priced at $34.99 and includes a region-free physical copy of the game plus an eight-page booklet, making it an easy entry point for anyone who wants the game on their shelf.
For collectors who want the full display-worthy package, the Bigger Boat Edition is priced at $99.99 and includes everything in the Standard Edition, plus an NES-inspired slipcover box, a CD featuring the original soundtrack composed by Shinichi Sakamoto, a “Beach Closed” enamel pin, a keychain, and a pixel-style great white shark lamp designed as a standout collectible.
Both editions include the original NES version with several quality-of-life upgrades that make replaying an old-school title far more comfortable today. Players can save anywhere, use a rewind feature, earn achievements and trophies, and browse extras like a built-in music player and an art gallery.
In addition to the classic version, the package also includes the new Enhanced Edition. This expanded mode builds a multi-chapter storyline and weaves in elements from all four movies, aiming to deliver more variety and a larger-scale progression than the original game.
Pre-orders for Jaws: Retro Edition are set to begin Friday, December 19 at 10 AM ET and will remain open through January 18, 2026. The project is currently listed as being in pre-production, and there are no purchase limits at the moment.
For fans of classic horror films, retro gaming collectors, and anyone who loves seeing forgotten titles resurfacing with thoughtful improvements, Jaws: Retro Edition offers a new reason to head back into the water—this time with modern features, collectible editions, and a bigger bite of content than before.
