YouTube Tamba Leak Suggests Google May Be Building a TikTok and Instagram Rival
Google may be preparing a bigger push into social media with a new app reportedly called YouTube Tamba. Newly spotted references inside the YouTube Android app suggest the company could be exploring a separate platform designed to compete more directly with TikTok and Instagram.
YouTube already has Shorts, its vertical short-video format created to rival TikTok-style content. But Tamba appears to go beyond short videos alone. Based on details found in the app code, the project may focus on social interaction, private sharing, messaging, and creator-friendly tools that feel more like a full social network than a traditional video platform.
The clues reportedly appeared in version 21.44.534 of the YouTube app for Android. The discovered assets include a Tamba logo that mixes a redesigned YouTube-style play button with the Tamba name. Unlike the clean and polished look of the main YouTube app, Tamba’s visual style seems more playful, using hand-drawn icons and a more casual design language.
Those icons offer hints about what the app could include. References point to features such as chat, camera tools, microphone access, friend adding, and post creation. That combination suggests Tamba may be built around quick content creation, social posting, and direct interaction between users.
One of the most notable differences could be privacy. While YouTube is primarily built around public videos and creator channels, Tamba may allow users to create private profiles. Content on these profiles would only be visible to approved followers, making the app feel closer to Instagram or TikTok’s more personal social experience.
The app is reportedly being developed with both Android phones and iPhone users in mind. If it launches, Google could use Tamba to target younger audiences who prefer fast, visual, mobile-first social platforms with built-in messaging and follower-based sharing.
However, there is still no guarantee that YouTube Tamba will ever be released publicly. Many major tech companies test experimental apps internally, and some never make it beyond the prototype stage. It is also possible that Google may choose to bring some of Tamba’s social features directly into the existing YouTube app instead of launching a completely separate platform.
If Tamba does become a real product, it could mark one of Google’s most serious attempts yet to challenge TikTok and Instagram in the social video space. With YouTube’s massive user base and Google’s experience in video technology, a dedicated social app could quickly become a major player if it offers the right mix of short videos, private sharing, messaging, and creator tools.
For now, YouTube Tamba remains an unreleased project hinted at through app code. Still, the discovery suggests Google is actively exploring new ways to make YouTube more social and more competitive in the fast-growing world of short-form video apps.
