Intel’s next-generation Nova Lake desktop processors are starting to take shape, and a fresh leak suggests the company may be preparing another major branding change. The latest information points to a possible Intel Core Ultra 9 4950K, a name that hints at the return of four-digit CPU model numbers after Intel recently moved away from its older five-digit naming style.
If accurate, this would mark another shift in Intel’s desktop CPU branding. After names like Core i9-14900K, Intel moved to shorter identifiers such as Core Ultra 9 285K with Arrow Lake. Now, Nova Lake could bring back a format that looks closer to “4950K,” potentially making the lineup easier to recognize as a new generation while still keeping the Core Ultra branding.
The leaked listing reportedly identifies the processor as part of Intel’s Nova Lake-S desktop family and associates it with the Intel 18A manufacturing process. The chip is said to feature a 28-core design, which appears to line up with previous rumors about a high-end Nova Lake desktop CPU.
The reported core layout is believed to include 8 performance cores and 20 efficiency-class cores. Earlier information suggested a slightly more detailed configuration of 8 P-cores, 16 E-cores, and 4 low-power efficiency cores. That means the latest leak may simply be grouping all efficiency-focused cores together under one total count.
Early benchmark numbers have also appeared, but they should be treated with caution. The alleged Core Ultra 9 4950K was reportedly tested on Intel’s upcoming Z990 desktop platform and reached close to 1,000 points in single-threaded testing and around 20,000 points in multi-threaded testing in what appears to be CPU-Z.
However, these results do not reveal the full picture. Important details such as clock speeds, memory configuration, power limits, cooling setup, and silicon maturity remain unknown. Because of that, it is too early to compare the Core Ultra 9 4950K directly against current Intel Core Ultra chips, AMD Ryzen processors, or existing high-end desktop CPUs.
One of the most interesting parts of the leak is the mention of Intel 18A. Previous Nova Lake rumors had suggested that Intel could rely heavily on TSMC’s N2 process for the CPU tile. More recent reports, however, indicate that Intel may be shifting a larger portion of Nova Lake production to its own 18A node.
Intel 18A is a key process technology for the company’s future roadmap and is already tied to products such as Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest. If Nova Lake desktop processors also use 18A more broadly, it would signal Intel’s confidence in bringing its advanced manufacturing back into the spotlight.
There have also been rumors that different Nova Lake desktop models may use different manufacturing strategies. Some standard desktop variants may use Intel 18A, while higher-end chips with larger cache designs could still rely on external silicon. In particular, cache-heavy models with bLLC may not follow the same production path as non-bLLC versions.
The leaked Core Ultra 9 4950K is not currently expected to include bLLC, according to earlier information. It has also been linked to a 65-watt nominal TDP, although that figure may not reflect real-world turbo power behavior, especially for an unlocked K-series desktop processor.
For PC enthusiasts, Nova Lake-S is shaping up to be one of Intel’s most important desktop launches in years. A 28-core Core Ultra 9 processor, a new Z990 platform, a possible return to four-digit CPU names, and wider use of Intel 18A could make this generation a major turning point for Intel’s desktop strategy.
Still, the Core Ultra 9 4950K remains unconfirmed for now. Until Intel officially reveals the Nova Lake lineup, details such as naming, core counts, process technology, platform support, cache configuration, and performance should be considered early information rather than final specifications.
