iPhone 18 Pro Max Camera Leak Points to Major Main Sensor Upgrade and Variable Aperture
Fresh details about the iPhone 18 Pro Max camera system have surfaced through an internal diagnostics log, giving an early look at what Apple may be preparing for its next flagship phone. The information appears to confirm several rumored camera specifications ahead of the expected iPhone 18 series launch in September 2026.
The most notable upgrade is expected to arrive on the main rear camera. According to the leaked diagnostics data, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will use a new Sony IMX905 sensor, replacing the main sensor found in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Interestingly, the pixel size reportedly remains at 1.22μm, which suggests Apple may not be focusing on a larger sensor this time. Instead, the biggest improvement appears to be the addition of variable aperture support.
Variable aperture could be one of the key camera features of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. This technology allows the camera to adjust the aperture depending on lighting conditions and shooting needs. In simple terms, it can help the phone capture better low-light photos, improve depth of field, and give users more control over how images look. While variable aperture has already appeared on some competing flagship smartphones, it would be a first for the iPhone lineup.

The telephoto camera is listed as the Sony IMX973, while the ultrawide camera is identified as the Sony IMX972. The LiDAR receiver is said to use the Sony IMX591, and the front-facing selfie camera is listed as the Sony IMX914.
The telephoto camera is expected to continue using 0.7μm native pixels that combine into 1.4μm pixels through binning. The log also points to a 3-axis spherical actuator for stabilization, suggesting Apple will continue using a gimbal-style optical image stabilization system for zoom photography. This should help maintain steady shots, especially when using longer focal lengths or recording video.
The leak reportedly comes from internal files linked to Tata Electronics, one of Apple’s major manufacturing partners in India. The company suffered a security breach earlier this year, and a large collection of internal files later appeared online. The exposed data allegedly included supplier information, component specifications, and internal images of iPhone 18 Pro prototypes undergoing testing.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to launch with the rest of the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026. Alongside the camera changes, Apple may also increase the price of the Pro Max model.
