Qualcomm’s Next Snapdragon 4-Series Chip Could Bring Big Upgrades to Budget Android Phones
A new leak has revealed early details about Qualcomm’s unreleased SM4875 chipset, reportedly codenamed “Poros.” The chip appears to be the next major entry in the Snapdragon 4-series lineup and could arrive as a successor to the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, which was introduced earlier this year.
While Qualcomm has not officially announced the SM4875, the leaked information suggests that the company is preparing a meaningful platform refresh for affordable and mid-range Android smartphones. The biggest changes appear to focus on graphics performance, memory support, wireless connectivity, security, and overall input/output capabilities.
According to the leaked data sheet, the SM4875 will continue using the same Kryo CPU layout as the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. That means the chip is expected to feature two Kryo Gold performance cores based on Arm Cortex-A78 architecture, each with 256 KB of L2 cache. These are paired with six Kryo Silver efficiency cores based on Cortex-A55 architecture, each carrying 64 KB of L2 cache. The full CPU cluster reportedly shares a 1 MB L3 cache.
The chipset is also said to remain on TSMC’s 4 nm manufacturing process, the same node used for the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. On paper, that may sound like a modest update, but the real improvements appear to come from the surrounding platform rather than the CPU itself.
One of the most notable upgrades is the move to an Adreno 6-series GPU. The previous Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 already delivered a strong graphics improvement over its predecessor, so the jump to a newer Adreno GPU family could make the SM4875 a much more capable chip for gaming, smoother user interfaces, and graphics-heavy apps.
For budget and lower mid-range Android phones, this could be a significant change. Devices using this chip may offer better frame rates in popular mobile games, improved visual performance, and a more responsive experience without pushing prices too high.
Memory support is also getting a major boost. The leaked specifications point to dual-channel LPDDR5 memory support at 3,200 MHz. That would be a big step forward from LPDDR4X-only support on the previous generation. Qualcomm is reportedly keeping LPDDR4X compatibility as an option, which would allow phone makers to choose between faster performance or lower production costs depending on the target device.
Connectivity could be another major selling point for the SM4875. The data sheet reportedly lists several wireless companion chip options, giving manufacturers flexibility based on price and feature needs.
Two older options support Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.x, while two newer modules bring Wi-Fi 6 support. One configuration may also offer Bluetooth 6.0, though this appears to depend on the specific companion chip selected by the phone manufacturer rather than being a universal feature of the SM4875 platform.
The addition of Wi-Fi 6 support would be a welcome upgrade for entry-level and affordable smartphones. Wi-Fi 6 can offer better performance in crowded networks, improved efficiency, and more stable connections compared to Wi-Fi 5. However, the leaked details do not indicate Wi-Fi 7 support, meaning Qualcomm may still reserve its latest wireless features for higher-tier Snapdragon platforms.
The SM4875 also appears to introduce a new single-lane PCIe Gen 3 interface for certain wireless modules. This seems to be aimed specifically at newer connectivity hardware rather than storage expansion. Even so, the presence of added I/O suggests Qualcomm is modernizing the Snapdragon 4-series platform to better support upcoming device designs.
Security features are also reportedly being updated. The chip is said to include hardware-based ECC image authentication, Widevine L1 support, and an improved Trust Management Engine for root-of-trust functions. For users, this could help support secure streaming, stronger device protection, and better overall platform integrity.
The leaked document also suggests that the SM4875 will use a larger package than the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. This likely reflects the added connectivity options, increased GPIO count, and newer hardware interfaces. While that may not mean much to everyday users, it could give smartphone manufacturers more flexibility when designing future devices.
At this stage, Qualcomm has not confirmed the SM4875, its final specifications, pricing, or release date. Since the information comes from a pre-release engineering document, some features may change before the chip reaches commercial devices.
Still, if the leak is accurate, the next Snapdragon 4-series chip could be one of the most important upgrades for affordable Android phones in the coming year. With an Adreno 6-series GPU, LPDDR5 memory support, optional Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 6.0 in select configurations, and improved security hardware, the SM4875 looks set to make budget smartphones faster, more efficient, and more future-ready.
A launch sometime in 2027 seems possible, though Qualcomm may reveal more details closer to the official debut.
