KLA Forecasts Wafer Fab Equipment Spending to Top $200 Billion in 2027
KLA expects global wafer fabrication equipment spending to rise above US$200 billion in 2027, signaling another major growth cycle for the semiconductor industry. The outlook reflects accelerating demand for advanced chips, with manufacturers preparing for larger investments in cutting-edge logic, DRAM, and high-bandwidth memory.
The forecast comes as chipmakers continue expanding capacity to support artificial intelligence, data centers, next-generation consumer devices, automotive electronics, and high-performance computing. These markets require more complex semiconductors, which in turn increases the need for advanced manufacturing tools used in wafer production.
Wafer fabrication equipment, often referred to as WFE, covers the machinery and systems required to produce semiconductor wafers. This includes equipment for deposition, lithography, etching, inspection, metrology, and other critical manufacturing steps. As chips become smaller, faster, and more power-efficient, the cost and complexity of production continue to rise, driving stronger spending across the supply chain.
A key growth driver is advanced logic manufacturing. Foundries and integrated device manufacturers are investing heavily in next-generation process nodes to meet demand from AI accelerators, smartphones, servers, and custom processors. These advanced nodes require more precise equipment and more process steps, increasing overall capital intensity.
Memory is also expected to play a major role in the projected spending surge. DRAM investment is gaining momentum as demand improves, while high-bandwidth memory has become one of the most important components in AI computing. HBM is essential for feeding data to powerful AI processors, making it a priority for leading memory manufacturers.
The expected jump beyond US$200 billion in 2027 suggests that semiconductor companies are positioning themselves for long-term demand, despite the cyclical nature of the chip industry. While short-term market conditions can fluctuate, the broader trend points toward continued growth in semiconductor content across nearly every major technology sector.
KLA’s outlook also highlights the growing importance of process control and yield management. As manufacturers push into more advanced technologies, detecting defects and improving production efficiency become increasingly critical. Even small improvements in yield can have a major financial impact when producing highly complex chips.
The semiconductor equipment market is being shaped by several powerful trends at once: AI infrastructure buildouts, rising memory requirements, more advanced packaging, regional chip manufacturing initiatives, and the transition to increasingly sophisticated process technologies. Together, these factors are expected to keep wafer fab equipment demand strong heading into 2027.
If KLA’s forecast proves accurate, surpassing US$200 billion in WFE spending would mark a significant milestone for the global semiconductor industry. It would also underline how essential chip manufacturing capacity has become to the future of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, electronics, and digital infrastructure.
