Kia recently unveiled exciting details about its modular electric van project at the PV5 Tech Day event in South Korea. This innovative PV5 van targets business sectors such as logistics, delivery, and utilities, crafted with insights from industry professionals.
Built on the advanced Hyundai E-GMP.S (Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service), an extended version of the existing E-GMP, the PV5 showcases standardized components like batteries, motors, and suspension. This approach not only allows for greater flexibility but also reduces development time.
Key benefits of this modular design include lower maintenance costs, enhanced durability, and minimized noise and vibration. To ensure a cohesive look, the external panels remain consistent across all variants.
The E-GMP.S platform is versatile, accommodating three battery sizes: 43.3 kWh (LFP), 51.5 kWh (NCM), and 71.2 kWh (NMC), all driving a robust front-mounted 161 hp/184 lb-ft electric motor.
With the modularity of the design, Kia can produce up to 16 different variants using just a few assembly lines. Customization options abound, including swappable body parts like doors, tailgates, and panels, alongside choices for rear modules and quarter glasses.
The PV5 boasts a wheelbase of 9.83 feet, offering a spacious cargo area up to 180 cubic feet. Interior features enhance functionality with removable seats, walk-through cabins, USB ports, and a side-entry ramp for wheelchair accessibility.
Initially, Kia plans to roll out seven configurations, including passenger long, cargo standard, cargo long, and cargo high roof versions. Production is slated to kick off before the end of July.
This development is a significant step in Kia’s journey towards sustainable and flexible transport solutions for businesses, marking a new chapter in their electric vehicle offerings.
