Citizen is giving its popular Tsuyosa automatic a bold new look with a fresh limited-edition collaboration alongside French artist Romaric André and his watch design project, seconde/seconde/. After a week of cryptic teasers, the brand has officially revealed a sporty, art-driven timepiece that blends everyday wearability with a playful “slice-through-time” concept.
The standout feature is the dial. Citizen pairs a vivid blue sunray finish with a pixel-art katana for the minute hand, creating the illusion that the sword is cutting straight across the face. The applied hour markers complete the visual joke, appearing as if they’ve been cleanly sliced in two. It’s an eye-catching twist on the Tsuyosa’s familiar sport-luxury vibe, and it’s designed to look different depending on how the light hits that sunburst blue surface.
The theme continues beyond the dial in small but satisfying details. The bracelet clasp is engraved with “cut” marks to match the katana concept, and the exhibition caseback includes a message tied to the watch’s story: “Being smaller has never stopped Minutes from slicing Hours into pieces.” With the movement visible through the transparent back, the watch leans into both the artistic narrative and the mechanical charm that enthusiasts expect from an automatic.
In terms of size and comfort, this collaboration sticks closely to what makes the Tsuyosa easy to wear. The watch comes in a 40mm silver-tone stainless steel case with an integrated three-link stainless steel bracelet. It weighs 136 grams and is designed to fit wrists from 145mm to 208mm, secured by a push-button folding clasp. Up front, a sapphire crystal protects the dial, while practical features like the magnified date window at 3 o’clock and luminous hands and markers keep it suitable for daily use. Water resistance is rated at 50 meters, which is fine for everyday situations but not intended for serious water activities.
Powering the watch is Citizen’s automatic Caliber 8210, a proven workhorse movement that offers hacking seconds, manual winding, and about 42 hours of power reserve. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and the exhibition caseback lets you see it in action—an appealing touch for anyone who enjoys the mechanics as much as the design.
As a collectible release, availability is intentionally limited. The Citizen Tsuyosa x seconde/seconde/ (NJ0157-81L) will be made in just 3,600 units worldwide and ships in custom packaging designed by Romaric André, complete with katana-inspired cut marks. Pricing is set at $495 / ¥73,700 / €449, with distribution rolling out through select Citizen retailers and the brand’s online stores across the US, Japan, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
