Jellyfin’s Major Update Revamps Books and Playlists, but Plugins Need a Fresh Build

Jellyfin 12.0 launches with built-in book support, faster playlists, and FFmpeg 8.1 compatibility

Jellyfin 12.0 is now available, marking a notable shift for the open-source media server. The project has simplified its version numbering by dropping the long-standing “10.” prefix, meaning this major update is now called Jellyfin 12.0 instead of 10.12.0.

The change is more than cosmetic. Previous releases could look smaller than they really were because the first number never changed. For example, a release such as 10.11.0 appeared minor at a glance, even though it introduced major internal changes. With the new naming approach, larger Jellyfin updates should be easier for users to recognize.

One of the biggest improvements in Jellyfin 12.0 is how playlists and collections are stored. In older versions, playlists and collections were kept as large lists inside a parent item. That made simple tasks more demanding than they needed to be, because the server often had to load and process the entire list just to count items, display a page, or remove a single track.

Jellyfin 12.0 changes that structure by storing each playlist or collection entry as its own database row. This should improve performance across several areas of the media server, especially for users with large libraries. Features such as Continue Watching, Next Up, artist searches, and folder watch counts are expected to feel faster and more responsive.

Book and comic support also gets a major upgrade. For years, Jellyfin users relied on the Bookshelf plugin for many book-related features. With Jellyfin 12.0, much of that functionality is now built directly into the server.

The new version can read OPF, ComicInfo, and ComicBookInfo metadata, making it easier to organize ebooks and comics with accurate information. It can also generate covers for EPUB files and supported comic archive formats, extract page counts from PDFs, and detect chapters in audiobooks. This makes Jellyfin more capable as a central media hub for users who store more than just movies, TV shows, and music.

The old Bookshelf plugin has been split into separate ComicVine and GoogleBooks metadata providers. A new OpenLibrary plugin is also available, giving users more options for enriching their book and comic libraries.

Another useful addition is support for alternate versions of episodes. This should help users who keep multiple cuts, encodes, or versions of the same episode in their Jellyfin library.

The user interface also receives a visible change. Jellyfin’s Modern web layout is now the default experience on both desktop and mobile. The previous layout has been renamed Legacy, allowing longtime users to understand which interface they are using while giving the platform a fresher default look.

On the technical side, Jellyfin 12.0 adds support for FFmpeg 8.1, improving the media server’s transcoding foundation. The release also includes important security fixes, including protections related to path traversal and cross-site scripting vulnerabilities.

Before upgrading, users should note a few important requirements. Jellyfin 12.0 requires an existing installation of version 10.10.7 or a 10.11.x build. After installing the update, a full library scan is mandatory.

Third-party plugins may not work immediately after the upgrade. Plugin developers will need to rebuild their add-ons against .NET 10 before compatibility is restored. Users who rely heavily on plugins may want to check availability before updating their main server.

Older /emby/ and /mediabrowser/ endpoints have also been removed in Jellyfin 12.0, which may affect older apps, scripts, or integrations that still depend on them.

Overall, Jellyfin 12.0 is a major release that improves performance, expands built-in book and comic support, modernizes the default interface, and strengthens the server’s technical foundation. For users with large media libraries, especially those managing playlists, collections, ebooks, comics, or audiobooks, this update brings meaningful improvements across the platform.
