Jason Momoa has reportedly stepped away from Sony’s upcoming live-action Helldivers movie, leaving the highly anticipated video game adaptation without its expected leading star.
According to multiple reports, Momoa is no longer attached to the project. At this stage, neither Sony nor the actor has publicly shared a reason for the exit, so details surrounding the departure remain unclear. Even so, the film is still moving forward, and the studio is said to be searching for a new actor to take over the lead role.
The Helldivers movie is based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ hit sci-fi shooter franchise, which follows soldiers fighting for “Super Earth” in a chaotic, satirical war against alien threats. The first game earned a dedicated fanbase, but Helldivers 2 turned the series into a global multiplayer phenomenon. Released in 2024, the sequel quickly became one of the year’s biggest online gaming successes, drawing in millions of players with its explosive co-op action, sharp humor, and exaggerated military propaganda.
The movie adaptation is still backed by a strong creative team. Justin Lin, widely known for his work on major action blockbusters, remains attached to direct. Gary Dauberman is writing the screenplay, while PlayStation Productions and experienced producer Hutch Parker are also involved in bringing the project to theaters.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but the Helldivers franchise gives filmmakers plenty to work with. Fans will likely expect intense alien battles, absurdly patriotic dialogue, large-scale action, and the dark comedy that made the games stand out from other sci-fi shooters.
