Japannext launches a slim 7.8-inch portable monitor with an unusual 5:16 display
Japannext has introduced one of the more unusual portable monitors on the market: a compact 7.8-inch IPS display with a tall and narrow 5:16 aspect ratio. Designed for users who need extra screen space in a very small footprint, the new Japannext IPS7843 is now available in Japan for 14,480 yen, which is roughly $93.
Unlike typical portable monitors that use a standard 16:9 widescreen layout, this model takes a very different approach. Its 400 x 1280 resolution gives it a long vertical shape, making it especially useful for tasks that benefit from stacked information. That includes chat windows, live dashboards, stock charts, system monitoring tools, social feeds, coding panels, and other real-time data displays.
Despite the resolution sounding modest on paper, the small 7.8-inch panel gives the monitor a pixel density of around 172 pixels per inch. That should be sharp enough for text, numbers, and interface elements, particularly for the productivity-focused use cases this screen appears to target.
The Japannext IPS7843 uses an IPS panel with a 60 Hz refresh rate. It also offers a claimed peak brightness of 550 nits, which is fairly high for a small portable display. The contrast ratio is listed at 900:1, while the screen comes with a glossy finish. That coating may help colors appear more vivid, though it could also produce more reflections depending on lighting conditions.
Portability is one of the main strengths of this monitor. The display itself weighs just 200 grams, or about 7.05 ounces, while the included stand adds another 50 grams, or around 1.7 ounces. The monitor measures 74 x 211 x 15 mm, making it narrow enough to fit into many bags without taking up much space. The stand measures 60 x 111 x 78 mm.
For connectivity, the IPS7843 includes a mini HDMI 1.4 port and a USB-C port used for power. This makes it suitable for pairing with laptops, compact PCs, certain gaming devices, and other compatible hardware, depending on the user’s setup.
The most interesting part of this portable monitor is clearly its shape. In portrait orientation, it works like a compact vertical information strip. In landscape orientation, it becomes a wide but short display that could be useful for timelines, monitoring bars, tool palettes, or secondary control panels. Japannext’s promotional use cases focus on chats, market data, and real-time monitoring, but the form factor could also appeal to streamers, developers, traders, and productivity enthusiasts who want a dedicated secondary screen without adding a large monitor to their desk.
For now, the Japannext IPS7843 has only launched in Japan. The company has released some of its products outside its home market before, so an international launch remains possible. Until then, buyers outside Japan may need to rely on import options if they want to try this unusual ultra-tall portable display.
