Japan Launches Probe into Payment Processors over Withheld Funds from Adult Steam Games

Yamada Taro, a proactive member of Japan’s National Diet, has taken a bold stance against payment processors that are denying services to Japanese artists. This alarming trend has been particularly troubling for those involved in adult content creation, where payment processors have imposed arbitrary standards on fictional works, effectively silencing creators by cutting off their financial lifelines.

Recent reports indicate that game developers using the Steam platform have become the latest victims, with payment processors allegedly halting their income. The situation has escalated with claims that Japanese banks are playing a role in this financial freeze.

Yamada Taro’s investigation highlights disturbing issues with Japanese financial institutions allegedly blocking remittances from Steam, owned by Valve Corporation, for adult-themed games. This means creators are unable to access their hard-earned revenue from international sales. Moreover, those dealing with adult content reportedly face challenges even opening a bank account within Japan.

The investigation is gaining momentum, as Yamada Taro has consulted with the Financial Services Agency and the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry to address these significant hurdles.

The constraints posed by these payment processors extend beyond Japan’s borders, impacting Western creators whose content runs afoul of vague decency standards upheld by major companies like Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal.

Despite claims that these actions are in response to laws such as the Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds and the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act, the measures have continued to create obstacles for global platforms like Patreon, DLSite, Pixiv, and DeviantArt. This ongoing crackdown illustrates a broader attack on creative freedom and raises critical questions about the balance between regulation and expression.
