Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro May Skip CXMT DRAM Due to A20 Pro Packaging Challenges
Apple’s rumored partnership with Chinese memory maker CXMT has generated plenty of attention, especially after reports claimed the company had started testing CXMT DRAM for future devices. However, a new supply-chain rumor suggests that CXMT memory may not make it into the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max after all.
Interestingly, the issue does not appear to be political pressure or trade restrictions. Instead, the challenge may come down to advanced chip packaging technology.
According to information shared by a Weibo tipster, Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chip is expected to use Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging, also known as WMCM. This would mark a major shift for Apple’s A-series processors, moving away from the older Package-on-Package design that has been used in previous generations.
That change could make it difficult for Apple to introduce a new DRAM supplier at this stage. The A20 Pro is believed to be designed and validated around memory from long-time partners such as Samsung and SK hynix, both of which have years of experience working with Apple’s strict performance, efficiency, and reliability requirements.
Advanced packaging is not a simple plug-and-play process. Every memory module paired with a high-end mobile chip must go through extensive testing to ensure it can meet Apple’s standards for speed, power consumption, heat control, stability, and mass production yield. Since CXMT has only recently been linked to Apple’s supply chain, there may not be enough time to qualify its DRAM for the premium iPhone 18 Pro models.
Samsung’s experience may also give it a major advantage. The company has already demonstrated strong capabilities in compact, high-performance memory design, including custom LPDDR5X solutions built to reduce physical size without sacrificing performance. That kind of expertise is especially valuable as Apple pushes toward more complex chip packaging for future iPhones.
Still, this does not mean CXMT is out of the picture entirely.
The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, which are expected to use the regular A20 chip rather than the A20 Pro, could still become candidates for CXMT DRAM. These models may not require the same level of advanced packaging integration as the Pro lineup, giving Apple more flexibility to test and approve an additional memory supplier.
Bringing CXMT into the supply chain could also help Apple reduce its dependence on a small group of memory manufacturers. With demand for AI-capable devices rising, memory supply has become more important than ever. Apple may want to secure more sources of DRAM to reduce shortage risks, improve production stability, and prepare for future iPhone, iPad, and Mac hardware requirements.
Pricing may not be the only factor driving Apple’s decisions anymore. As artificial intelligence features become a bigger part of smartphones, memory capacity and supply reliability are becoming strategic priorities. Even if CXMT does not appear in the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple’s testing of the company’s DRAM could still be an important step toward diversifying its component suppliers.
For now, the most likely outcome is that Samsung and SK hynix remain the primary memory suppliers for Apple’s highest-end iPhone 18 Pro models, while CXMT may have a better chance of entering through the standard iPhone 18 lineup. If Apple can successfully validate CXMT’s DRAM over the coming months, the Chinese manufacturer could become a more visible part of Apple’s future hardware ecosystem.
