iPhone 17 to feature 12GB RAM instead of 8GB

iPhone 17: A Leap Ahead with Enhanced RAM Upgrade Rumors

Apple is poised to focus on its AI capabilities to drive iPhone 16 sales, with all models equipped with 8GB of RAM and an advanced Neural Engine to seamlessly support both cloud-based and on-device AI functionalities. However, enthusiasts seeking a significant memory upgrade may want to hold off until the iPhone 17’s release in 2025, which is rumored to feature 12GB of RAM.

A previous rumor also indicated that the iPhone 17 models would receive a 12GB RAM upgrade, specifically for the ‘Pro’ versions. This aligns with the latest commentary from a user on Weibo known as ‘Mobile phone chip expert,’ who suggested that the upcoming 2025 lineup would include this substantial memory boost.

It remains unclear whether this RAM increase will apply to all iPhone 17 versions or just the Pro models. Earlier predictions by Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu also suggested that the 12GB RAM would be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, with the non-Pro variants continuing to feature 8GB of RAM.

Adding more memory to an iPhone has clear advantages. It allows greater independence for on-device AI operations, especially useful in areas with limited internet access. Moreover, the additional RAM would enable game developers to port more AAA games with high-level textures to these devices. Currently, while 8GB RAM can be somewhat restrictive, upgrading to 12GB would significantly enhance performance and capabilities.
