iPhone 16 DXOMARK camera testing below iPhone 16 Pro Max

iPhone 16’s Camera Falls Short of Pro Models, Lands 20th in DXOMARK Rankings

The iPhone 16 lineup has stirred a lot of excitement, particularly with its ‘Pro’ models flaunting remarkable camera capabilities. While the iPhone 16 Pro Max has scored high praise, securing fourth place in DXOMARK’s camera evaluations and topping the charts in video performance, the same accolades do not extend to the standard iPhone 16. Despite improvements brought by Apple’s latest enhancements, the iPhone 16 ranks 20th in DXOMARK’s camera testing overall.

The iPhone 16’s camera hardware remains almost identical to its predecessor, the iPhone 15, but this year’s model benefits from refined software optimizations. With an overall DXOMARK score of 147, it outperforms the previous software’s capacities, though it still falls short compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s impressive score of 157.

In the smartphone camera industry, DXOMARK’s tests showcase a real blend of everyday and lab-based scenarios, stressing real-world performance alongside controlled conditions. The iPhone 16’s strong points in these tests include notable brightness and contrast on HDR displays, appealing skin tones, and vibrant colors in both photos and videos. It offers high levels of detail in well-lit and indoor environments, with quick and accurate autofocus, plus smooth zooming capabilities. Video performance benefits from controlled noise and effective stabilization.

However, the iPhone 16’s limitations are also noteworthy. DXOMARK points to restricted dynamic range, flare, color shift issues, and subpar telephoto zoom abilities. There is also more noticeable video noise under low-light conditions, particularly in shadowed areas. Despite these drawbacks, the iPhone 16 remains a formidable contender in video recording, living up to Apple’s reputation in this domain. Its video performance scored remarkably high, almost on par with the Pro Max, which bodes well for those prioritizing videography.

Looking forward, anticipation is building around what Apple will deliver with the iPhone 17, especially with rumors suggesting major innovations in camera hardware. It will be intriguing to see how these advancements reflect in future DXOMARK evaluations.
