iPhone 16 Pro: A Welcome Return to Compact Elegance

When it comes to smaller “Pro” iPhones, it used to be quite frustrating that they didn’t match up to their larger siblings in terms of specifications. The smaller devices naturally came with smaller batteries, but downgrading the camera systems between models that both carried the “Pro” name was especially disappointing for those preferring a more compact handset.

Apple previously equipped the iPhone 15 Pro Max with a 5x telephoto lens while the iPhone 15 Pro lagged behind with only a 3x telephoto. Fortunately, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have leveled the playing field. No longer will users who opt for the smaller device feel shortchanged, as both models now boast the same 5x telephoto lens. Additionally, both phones are equipped with a dedicated (simulated) 2-stage camera button, emphasizing Apple’s commitment to delivering top-notch camera features in both sizes.

Apple isn’t the only company catching on to the demand for smaller devices with high-end specs. Google has acknowledged that some users crave “Pro” features without the need for an oversized screen. This year, the Pixel 9 Pro is available in two sizes: 6.3 inches and 6.8 inches. The latter size matches the outgoing Pixel 8 Pro, ensuring that those who want a more manageable device aren’t left out of the “Pro” experience.

This shift in design philosophy by leading tech companies signifies that they are starting to understand that not everyone who wants a top-tier camera system also desires a massive screen. Whether other manufacturers like Samsung, known for reserving its best camera features for the larger Galaxy S24 Ultra, will follow suit remains to be seen. Historically, Samsung has not marketed the standard S24 model as having identical “Pro” features to their flagship variant.

Despite this positive trend, we might never see truly small flagships again. The only companies that previously offered smaller high-end models, Apple and Asus, have since dropped these offerings from their lineups. While the iPhone 16 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro wouldn’t exactly be called “small,” both provide users with more compact options without compromising on flagship camera capabilities.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max commence on Friday, September 13th.

If innovation like this continues, both Android and iOS enthusiasts can look forward to a future where size no longer dictates the quality of features on their devices. The ability to have a smaller flagship phone no longer means compromising on what makes a “Pro” model worthy of its title.
