Apple has once again taken a significant leap forward in its Mac Studio lineup by introducing an incredibly powerful desktop option for professionals. The latest Mac Studio is designed to elevate your computing experience with its impressive combination of two standout chips: the M4 Max and the resurrected M3 Ultra.
For those who value raw power and efficiency, the M4 Max offers a robust performance featuring up to a 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU, mirroring the specifications found in the MacBook Pro. However, if you’re looking for something even more groundbreaking, the M3 Ultra doubles the ante. This powerhouse stacks two M3 Max chips side by side, boasting an incredible 28-core CPU equipped with 20 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores, alongside a staggering 60-core GPU, which can be expanded to a 32-core CPU with an 80-core GPU. This ensures that your most demanding tasks are handled with ease and speed, delivering a memory bandwidth that peaks at an extraordinary 892 GB/s.
Apple boasts that the M3 Ultra outpaces its predecessor, the M1 Ultra, by an impressive 2.6 times, packing a potent 32-core Neural Engine that accelerates token generation up to 16.9 times faster in LM Studio. To support its robust performance, the Mac Studio is equipped with abundant I/O options, including four Thunderbolt 5.0 ports, two USB 3.2 Type-C ports (with Thunderbolt 5.0 on the M3 Ultra variant), two USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a 10 Gb/s Ethernet connection, one HDMI 2.1 port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.
Starting configurations feature the M4 Max variant with 512 GB of storage and 36 GB of unified memory. Meanwhile, the M3 Ultra begins with a 1 TB SSD combined with 96 GB of unified memory. Both options offer extensive upgradability—M4 Max can scale up to 128 GB RAM and 8 TB storage, while the M3 Ultra can reach an astonishing 512 GB RAM with up to 16 TB of storage.
One of the many marvels of these desktops is their display capabilities. The M4 Max can support video output to five displays, whereas the M3 Ultra extends support up to eight displays. Although Wi-Fi 7 remains out of reach, users still benefit from the fast connectivity of Wi-Fi 6e and Bluetooth 5.3.
The new Mac Studio lineup is poised to be a significant contender in the high-performance computing market. These machines redefine desktop power at compelling price points—starting at $1,999 for the M4 Max and $3,999 for the M3 Ultra. They are available for pre-order now, promising to transform your desktop experience when they hit the shelves on March 12.
