Keychron is setting new benchmarks in the world of mechanical keyboards with its latest upgrade to the popular 75% Keychron K3—the Keychron K3 QMK Version 3. This release embeds enthusiast-level features, blending advanced customization options with impressive design enhancements.
The standout feature of the new K3 is the integration of QMK firmware. This upgrade opens up a realm of possibilities for keyboard aficionados, enabling seamless remapping, layer adjustments, and much more—all through a simple web app. This functionality is a boon for Linux and macOS users, eliminating the need to rely on a different operating system for keyboard customization.
Designed as a low-profile wireless mechanical keyboard, the Keychron K3 QMK V3 also excels in portability, ideal for those on the go. Offering both USB Type-C and Bluetooth connectivity, it caters to a wide range of user preferences, with USB providing an impressive 1,000 Hz polling rate. The keyboard’s design combines a floating keycap look with an aluminum top case, making for a stylish yet lightweight accessory at just 540 grams.
The K3 QMK V3 is available in three configurations to suit different needs and budgets: the White Backlight version at $84, the RGB Backlight at $94, and the RGB Backlight with a hot-swap PCB for $104. This last version is particularly noteworthy for those looking to easily switch out stabilizers, switches, and acoustics, offering unparalleled customization potential.
The RGB backlit version with hot-swappable switches is the star here. However, the standard options come with either red linear or brown tactile low-profile switches, crafted in collaboration with Gateron. These switches are pre-lubed for smooth operation, promising a balanced actuation force of 45 gf and a total travel distance of 3.1 mm. For nuanced performance, the tactile brown switch offers a pre-travel distance of 1.7 mm, while the red switch is slightly shorter at 1.3 mm.
Consistent with its predecessors, the K3 QMK V3 features double-shot, shine-through keycaps ensuring durability and long-lasting legibility. The use of ABS keycaps appeals to those who prefer its texture over PBT. With a maintained battery capacity of 1550 mAh, enhancements like an upgraded controller and transition to Bluetooth 5.2 have extended the battery life significantly—from 70 hours to an impressive 124 hours without backlighting.
The Keychron K3 QMK V3 is currently available directly from Keychron, promising to soon expand its reach to broader retail platforms, maximizing accessibility for eager users worldwide.
