Intel’s next-generation desktop platform is starting to take shape, and a newly spotted LGA 1954 socket has given PC enthusiasts an early look at what could power the upcoming Nova Lake-S processors.

A photo reportedly taken in Taipei shows what appears to be Intel’s new LGA 1954 CPU socket. While Intel has not officially detailed the platform yet, the sighting suggests that motherboard makers may already be preparing early hardware samples ahead of the Nova Lake launch.

The most interesting detail is the socket’s dual retention design. This mechanism appears to be built to hold the processor more securely in place, which could be important as Intel moves to a newer platform with a higher pin count. Despite the increase to 1,954 pins, the socket is said to keep the same physical dimensions as the current LGA 1851 socket, measuring 45 x 37.5 mm.

That could be good news for PC builders. If the dimensions remain the same, many existing LGA 1851-compatible CPU coolers may work with LGA 1954 motherboards. This would make upgrading to Intel’s Nova Lake platform more convenient and potentially less expensive, since users may not need to buy a new cooling solution.

The LGA 1954 socket is expected to support Intel Nova Lake-S desktop processors, which are rumored to bring major changes to Intel’s consumer CPU lineup. Reports suggest that the top Nova Lake-S chips could feature up to 52 cores, marking a significant jump for Intel’s mainstream desktop platform.

Nova Lake is also expected to introduce a major shift in integrated graphics. The lineup may be the first from Intel to combine two different GPU architectures, reportedly using both Xe3 and Xe3P graphics technology. This could improve integrated graphics performance and make future Intel desktop chips more competitive for users who do not plan to install a dedicated graphics card.

There is also speculation that Intel could prepare more powerful APU-style variants with stronger graphics capabilities. If true, these chips may be designed to compete more directly with AMD’s popular desktop APUs, which are known for offering solid CPU and integrated GPU performance in a single package.

Intel Nova Lake processors are expected to arrive later this year, with both desktop and mobile versions likely planned. For desktop users, the arrival of Nova Lake-S should be paired with a new generation of LGA 1954 motherboards. The flagship chipset for the platform is expected to be Z990, which will likely target high-end gaming PCs, enthusiast builds, and premium workstations.

Although the platform is still months away from launch, the appearance of the LGA 1954 socket suggests that Intel and its motherboard partners are already deep into preparation. As development continues, more leaks and early hardware sightings are likely to appear, giving PC builders a clearer idea of what to expect from Intel’s next major desktop upgrade.
