Intel Dunlow Platform Could Bring Mainstream Xeon CPUs Back With Up to 28 Nova Lake-S Cores
Intel appears to be preparing a fresh mainstream Xeon desktop lineup, and this time the company may be moving far beyond the modest core counts seen in its most recent entry-level workstation chips. The upcoming platform is reportedly codenamed Dunlow and is expected to support Nova Lake-S processors with configurations reaching up to 28 cores.
For years, Intel’s mainstream Xeon desktop offerings have been relatively quiet. The current Xeon E-2400 series is still based on the Raptor Lake architecture and tops out at 8 cores. Intel did release Bartlett Lake-S processors with up to 12 performance cores, but those chips were aimed at edge-focused deployments rather than being part of the Xeon desktop family.
That could change with Nova Lake. While Arrow Lake desktop processors remained focused on the Core Ultra 200S consumer lineup, Nova Lake-S may mark the return of a more capable mainstream Xeon family for workstation and professional desktop users.
Recent shipping records point to Intel’s next-generation mainstream Xeon platform under the Dunlow name. The platform is expected to use the LGA 1954 socket and support Nova Lake-S desktop CPUs. Early details suggest support for processors with up to 28 cores, a single compute tile design, a maximum TDP of around 95 watts, and dual-channel DDR5 memory.
Only a 28-core version has surfaced so far, but Intel’s Nova Lake-S lineup is expected to be broad, which means several Xeon configurations could eventually appear. Intel is also believed to be working on Nova Lake-S chips for edge applications, including versions with up to 12 Xe3P integrated GPU cores.
Another notable detail is the appearance of an early Dunlow motherboard. A listing has identified the Supermicro MBD-X15SDCB-IN001, which appears to be a customer reference board or CRB. This suggests platform development is already underway and that Intel’s partners may be preparing for future validation work.
One of the biggest changes could be the CPU core layout. Intel’s previous mainstream Xeon desktop chips relied on performance cores only. However, the 28-core Nova Lake-S Xeon models are expected to use a hybrid design with both P-Cores and E-Cores. If accurate, this would signal the return of efficient cores to Intel’s desktop Xeon lineup, potentially improving multi-threaded performance and power efficiency for workstation workloads.
Nova Lake desktop processors are currently expected to arrive in early 2027. If Intel follows its usual rollout pattern, the mainstream Xeon models for the Dunlow platform could launch a few months later.
For professionals, small business workstations, developers, creators, and edge computing users, the return of a mainstream Xeon lineup with higher core counts could be significant. A 28-core Nova Lake-S Xeon would offer a major upgrade over the current 8-core Xeon E-2400 series and could make Intel’s workstation platform more competitive in demanding productivity, engineering, virtualization, and content creation workloads.
