Intel’s recent 0x12B Microcode BIOS patch has sparked quite a conversation among tech enthusiasts, particularly those packing 13th or 14th Gen Core i9 CPUs. Although intended as an enhancement, this third Vmin Shift Instability mitigation update, succeeding the 0x129 patch from August, has left some users scratching their heads over unexpected performance dips.
Intel initially assured that the performance changes would be negligible, confined within a run-to-run variation that generally falls under a margin of error of about +-1%. This should mean any shift in performance is almost imperceptible in typical use and applications like Cinebench R23, Speedometer, and Crossmark.
However, real-world tests suggest otherwise. A Chiphell forum user, ‘twfox,’ noted a downturn in benchmarking scores for the Intel Core i9 13900K on an ASUS motherboard configuration. A significant finding was the absence of the option to disable C1E in BIOS, which might contribute to maintaining CPU stability under stress.
Confirmed by BIOS release notes from various motherboard manufacturers, the performance declines are evident. For instance, the Intel Core i9 13900K saw a 6.5% drop in Cinebench R15 scores, sliding from the usual 330-340 points range to 314 points post-patch.
This impact is noticeable across other benchmarks too. Comparatively, the i9-13900K now falls below AMD’s Ryzen 7 7700X in some tests, which maintains a score around 320 points. Moreover, the i9-14900K tested on a ROG Z790 HERO with the new 0x12B BIOS also exhibited minor performance losses.
Particularly in Cinebench R23, the multi-core scores dipped to 37,276, down from the customary 38,000+ points, allowing the Ryzen 9 7950X, which scores around 37,500, to edge ahead.
Despite these performance reductions, users have limited options if they wish to prevent potential long-term damage to their CPUs. For those contemplating new Intel-based builds, opting for mid-range or budget Raptor Lake/Refresh chips could be a safer bet. Alternatively, ensuring motherboards are equipped with stable BIOS patches tailored for 13th and 14th Gen Core i9 CPUs could help maintain optimal performance. Another viable option is waiting for Intel’s upcoming Arrow Lake “Core Ultra Series 2” chips for a more stable upgrade path.
