Instagram Launches Teen Accounts with Enhanced Safety Measures in India

Instagram is making significant strides to bolster the safety of its young users with the launch of its Teen Accounts feature in India, a crucial market boasting over 350 million users. This initiative follows the successful introduction of the same in countries like the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia last year.

These Teen Accounts are designed with robust safety measures to protect users under the age of 16. By default, these accounts are private, offering enhanced privacy and protection. They come equipped with messaging restrictions, content controls, interaction limits, time limit reminders, and even a sleep mode to ensure teenagers can maintain a healthy relationship with the app.

Natasha Jog, Director of Public Policy India at Instagram, expressed the company’s commitment to creating a safer digital environment. The expansion in India aims to fortify protections, enhance content controls, and enable parental oversight, all while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for younger users.

An important feature of these accounts is the requirement for parental permission to alter some account settings, and parents of teens over 16 can opt to supervise their teen’s account. Parents will gain insights into who their children interact with, although they won’t have access to the messages themselves. They can also impose daily usage limits and restrict app access during certain hours.

From a content perspective, Instagram restricts messaging to people the user is already connected with. A person qualifies as connected if they share a mutual friendship or have previously interacted via direct messages, even without following each other. Moreover, teens can only be tagged by people they follow.

To further safeguard young users, Instagram is automatically filtering out offensive language and blocking content related to violence or certain commercial promotions, like cosmetics, from teens’ explore pages and Reels. Teens can then customize their Explore page by selecting topics such as Soccer, Crafts, Dance, Music, and more to align with their interests.

To address age misrepresentation, a common issue across social media, Instagram is employing techniques like ID verification and video selfies to verify users’ ages accurately.

Furthermore, India has recently proposed new draft rules for its data protection law, which if enacted, could mandate platforms to have enhanced protection measures for users under 18, requiring verifiable parental consent for data processing.

Through these measures, Instagram’s Teen Accounts aim to provide a more secure and controlled online environment, ensuring young users can explore the platform safely while granting parents peace of mind over their children’s online interactions.
