Instagram Introduces Speed Control for Reels, Mirroring TikTok Features

Instagram, a platform under the Meta umbrella, has once again drawn inspiration from its rival TikTok, adding a new feature to Reels that allows users to watch videos at twice the speed. By simply long pressing on either the right or left side of the screen, viewers can now zip through content at a quicker pace.

TikTok originally captivated users with short, snappy 15-second clips, but as its popularity surged, it expanded the duration options, accompanying this change with the ability to speed up videos. This catered to an audience accustomed to digesting information rapidly.

Similarly, Instagram Reels began with a 15-second maximum video length and over time, expanded this limit to 3 minutes. Now, by introducing the fast-forward capability, Instagram aims to enhance user experience by allowing them to consume content more efficiently.

The fast-forward option could make it easier for viewers to stay engaged and reach the conclusion of longer videos, aligning with Reels’ concept of delivering quick, digestible entertainment bites. The underlying concern is whether the trend towards easily consumable short-form content might be affecting our attention span for more extensive videos.

While Instagram Reels has closely mirrored TikTok in its features, it’s clear that its strategy involves incorporating popular elements from the short-form giant to meet user demands and keep pace with evolving content consumption habits. For example, Instagram’s Remix feature is another tribute to TikTok’s Duet tool, further exemplifying its strategy to mirror successful elements from competitors.
