Instagram is set to elevate its direct messaging experience with a suite of exciting new features that promise to give its platform an edge over competitors like Apple’s iMessage and other popular third-party messaging apps. These updates are rolling out globally, offering Instagram users enhanced functionality for their chats with translation capabilities, message scheduling and pinning, music sharing, and more.
Initially, both iOS and Android users will have access to these features, while web integration will come at a later stage.
Among the stand-out enhancements is the music-sharing feature, which is likely to captivate younger audiences who often use social platforms like Instagram and TikTok to discover new music. By tapping the sticker button in the chat composer, users can select “Music” to search a vast library and share a 30-second preview of any song within group chats or broadcast channels. This not only allows users to share tunes with friends but also provides artists a novel way to engage with their fans on social media. This feature will be spotlighted through collaborations with artists like JENNIE and Doechii.
Another notable update is the ability to translate messages into 99 different languages, broadening the platform’s versatility for users around the globe.
Furthermore, Instagram users can now pin messages, images, memes, or reels to the top of their chats for easy access or just for fun. This function is activated by holding down on the item and selecting “Pin,” and you can conveniently unpin by reversing the process. Up to three messages can be pinned per conversation, ensuring important information is always at your fingertips.
Following in the footsteps of Apple’s iMessage, Instagram now offers a message scheduling feature. Users can schedule when their messages are sent by long-pressing the “send” button and choosing a specific date and time—up to 29 days in advance.
Lastly, Instagram introduces a new way to invite friends to group chats by sending a QR code invitation. From a chat’s invite link, the “QR Code” option allows sending the invite live or saving it as an image for future use through the share sheet or the Camera Roll.
These innovations in Instagram’s direct messaging aim to streamline communication and make interacting within the app more dynamic and enjoyable for its vast user base.
