The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has been a hot topic since its introduction, not only because of its polarizing design but also due to its performance credentials. A recent range test conducted on the Hyundai Ioniq 6 Long Range AWD model revealed some intriguing outcomes, particularly when compared to its EV competitors, including the Tesla Model Y.
During a test performed by ArenaEV, the Ioniq 6 showed remarkable efficiency at a constant speed of 90 km/h (56 mph), accomplishing an impressive 564 km (350 miles) range. This feat places it second only to the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ sedan in this speed category. However, at a slower speed of 60 km/h (37 mph), the Ioniq 6’s performance was average among other electric vehicles.
The real disadvantage became evident in the 130 km/h (81 mph) speed test where the Ioniq 6’s range plummeted to only 336 km (209 miles). This result was lower than all other competitors except for the 2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range, which managed a similar 334 km (208 miles) under the same conditions.
It’s crucial to note that the tested Ioniq 6 was equipped with 20-inch wheels. Hyundai’s own estimates suggest a 435 km (270 miles) range with these larger wheels, compared to the 509 km (316 miles) potential range on the 18-inch wheels. It’s speculated that opting for the smaller wheels could boost the Ioniq 6’s performance significantly.
Interestingly, the Tesla Model Y Long Range had a slight edge over the Hyundai in the 60 km/h test, clocking in at 728 km, surpassing the Ioniq 6 by 20 km. Despite this, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 boasted an overall superior range in the real-world scenario, though its high-speed capabilities could detract from its appeal for some consumers looking for sustained performance at freeway speeds.
