NVIDIA has recognized Huawei’s impressive strides in AI technology, admitting their solutions are surpassing what NVIDIA offers in China, effectively pushing them out of the market. NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, highlighted Huawei’s rapid progress in developing AI chips and systems that rival their top-tier products during an interview with Bloomberg.
Initially enjoying a leading position in AI without much competition, NVIDIA now faces a noteworthy adversary in Huawei. Despite facing tough US regulations, Huawei has managed to create competitive hardware solutions for mainstream markets. Their technology is believed to rival NVIDIA’s sophisticated offerings, such as the H200, and their new Cloud Matrix system is reportedly even more expansive than NVIDIA’s latest generation, Grace Blackwell.
Jensen Huang acknowledged Huawei as a strong technological challenger, making strategic moves to remain competitive. This acknowledgment marks a significant shift; previously, Huang had referred to Huawei simply as a “formidable rival,” but now he explicitly discusses their competitive edge. It’s the first public confirmation of Huawei’s Cloud Matrix performance being comparable to NVIDIA’s high-end systems.
Additionally, Huang noted that Huawei’s latest AI chip, possibly the Ascend 910C, is on par with NVIDIA’s H200 AI accelerator. This revelation suggests that Huawei has rapidly closed the performance gap, quickly aligning with NVIDIA’s product development pace—causing concern for NVIDIA’s market presence in China.
