Huawei has announced its latest venture into the operating system market with HarmonyOS NEXT. During the development event for the new OS, Huawei’s Consumer Business Group CEO, Yu Chengdong, made assertive claims about the system’s capabilities, stating that it is a fully independent platform with a robust AI framework. The most striking claim was that HarmonyOS NEXT’s kernel offers memory efficiency that is three times greater than that of traditional Linux kernels.
According to Yu, HarmonyOS NEXT stands apart from the crowd, being touted as “a real operating system” rather than just another Android variation. The Harmony kernel at the heart of the OS is a proprietary development by Huawei, and it is this self-developed kernel that is credited for the heightened memory efficiency.
HarmonyOS NEXT is engineered with a heterogenous ‘native-like’ mechanism that is said to foster a seamless and fluid user experience. In addition to efficiency, security is a top priority with this new OS. Huawei revealed that HarmonyOS NEXT comes equipped with top-tier security certifications at the kernel level, firmly placing it as a secure alternative in the OS market. On-device AI capabilities have also been integrated into the system, setting HarmonyOS NEXT up to potentially rival the custom Android versions offered by other leading brands.
The strategic move to create HarmonyOS NEXT is part of Huawei’s bid to establish independence from U.S. technology dependencies, particularly in the software powering Huawei smartphones. HarmonyOS NEXT represents a privacy-centric shift, fully optimized to deliver an experience that is both smooth and secure.
Although Huawei’s statements have certainly set the bar high, the true performance and efficiency of HarmonyOS NEXT will only become evident once the OS moves from its current developer preview stage to a stable release, which is planned for the fourth quarter of 2024.

With the tech community watching closely, it remains to be seen whether Huawei can indeed deliver on the lofty promises tied to HarmonyOS NEXT.
