miHoYo has confirmed that Honkai: Star Rail Version 4.2, titled “So Laughed the Masses,” arrives April 22 on all platforms. The update pushes the Phantasmoon Games into a new phase with higher stakes, fresh main story chapters, new 5-star playable characters, rerun banners, character buffs, and a full slate of third anniversary celebrations.
The biggest narrative shake-up in Version 4.2 comes from an unprecedented escalation to the Phantasmoon Games’ ultimate prize: the winner won’t simply take home glory, but will become the permanent Aeon of Elation. With an entire world watching and major factions growing suspicious, the Trailblazer is shoved into the spotlight—and that attention quickly turns dangerous.
A new key figure, Fulwish, enters the fray as the leader of the Research Society of Happy Smiles and a powerful local media mogul. Fulwish summons all Supplicants to the Fulwish TV headquarters in Seafeld City, a scenic holiday resort known for its crisp views and pleasant climate. There, a televised public debate is staged around one loaded question: “What kind of future will the Phantasmoon Games bring to this world?” For the Trailblazer, it’s the kind of provocation that can’t be ignored, even if it’s clearly a trap designed to manipulate public opinion. As the debate unfolds, the Trailblazer must navigate tricks and schemes, gather more Wishpower, and confront a crisis hidden beneath the showmanship—while Silver Wolf and Pearl pursue a mysterious deal that could shift everything.
Two new 5-star characters join the roster as the competition intensifies: Silver Wolf LV.999 and Evanescia, both tied closely to the Path of Elation and positioned as pivotal allies for what comes next.
Silver Wolf LV.999 is a 5-star Imaginary character on the Path of Elation—an evolved “Godmode Player” version of the well-known Stellaron Hunter and Punklorde hacker. In battle, she builds “Hidden MMR” to activate an exclusive Cartridge and enter her “Godmode Player” state. Once active, she drags allies and enemies into her own game-like domain, opening a “Reward stage” at the start of her turn. During this phase, she can generate various in-game items through her Cartridge, altering combat flow and distributing powerful buffs to the team. Her kit also features an “Aha Instant” moment where she unleashes a massive, game-crashing laser attack on all enemies. She brings additional utility as well: if an ally is afflicted by enemy control, she can “hack” into the fight to grant temporary control immunity—even when she isn’t actively deployed—adding a defensive safety net that can save runs.
Evanescia is a 5-star Physical character on the Path of Elation, introduced as a long-time “Special Observer” of the Phantasmoon Games who has witnessed multiple iterations and countless betrayals. Rather than obsessing over who wins, she fixates on the Trailblazer as her chosen “protagonist,” and Version 4.2 promises gradual reveals that lead toward the truth of her identity. In combat, Evanescia builds “Certified Banger” through Energy regeneration, ally Charge effects, or changes to “Certified Banger” values on teammates. Each gain also restores her Energy, helping her maintain momentum. As the stacks grow, so does her damage, and reaching certain thresholds can trigger “Master Fox” to strike all enemies while restoring Energy for Evanescia. She also brings an Elation Skill that hits all enemies and raises the team’s overall damage, turning her into both a stylish damage dealer and a rhythm-based amplifier for party output.
Version 4.2 also expands the playable options for the Trailblazer by introducing the Trailblazer on the Path of Elation. Their signature weapon, a glow stick, shifts forms for different effects: it can become a lightblade to damage all enemies while granting “Certified Banger,” or transform into nunchucks for a rapid multi-hit flurry. The Ultimate adds a crowd-hype twist by letting the Trailblazer choose a teammate to cheer on, granting that ally “Certified Banger” and enabling them to immediately use their Elation Skill for a more explosive, combo-friendly turn flow.
Alongside the new characters, Version 4.2 includes special Warp events split across the update’s two halves. In the first half, limited 5-star characters The Dahlia, Castorice, and Firefly return. In the second half, Tribbie, Sunday, and Feixiao also get reruns. The patch further strengthens several established fan-favorites with buffs for Firefly, Huohuo, Seele, and Welt—an upgrade that should reshape team planning for both longtime players and anyone returning for the anniversary.
Speaking of the anniversary, Honkai: Star Rail’s third anniversary celebrations are a major part of Version 4.2, offering multiple rewards and events designed to bring players back daily. The “Festive Gifts” check-in event returns, letting players earn a total of 20 pulls. On April 26, players can pick a blessing card from a companion and receive 1,600 Stellar Jades as a special anniversary gift. Two limited 5-star characters, Huohuo and Robin, will be added to the “Stellar Convergence” Store, and players can use a freely claimed Golden Companion Spirit to exchange for a companion of their choice there. The annual first-time top-up double bonus reset is also back, and additional updates arrive via new items in the Gift of Stardust Store plus a new Outfit for Castorice.
To deepen the celebration beyond the game client, an online anniversary activity titled “Aha’s Chosen: Spreading Elation Everywhere” invites players to leave messages for a chance at multiple prizes, including a Silver Wolf LV.999-themed “Crown of Aha” car. Offline festivities are also planned to roll out across major cities such as Tokyo, Seoul, and Los Angeles, with themed parades, street events, and collaborations.
The update’s event lineup extends well beyond login rewards. “Cosmic Data Roaming” debuts as a new activity centered on building a streamer-style career by broadcasting standout combat moments. Currency Wars receives a major expansion after the version update, adding more gameplay variety. The Cosmicon Collective also gets a substantial Version 2.0 refresh called “Cosmicon, Roll On Again!” with new decks, new dice, and a new team challenge mode. Additional features and activities, including “Express Renovation Escapade” and “Relic Recon,” round out the anniversary period to keep the schedule packed.
To cap off the special program, miHoYo also revealed a concept trailer for “Death in the Afternoon,” an original animation project co-produced by HoYoverse and MAPPA—another sign that the Honkai: Star Rail universe is continuing to expand beyond the game itself.
With a high-stakes story escalation, two new 5-star Elation characters, the Elation Trailblazer, reruns and buffs, and generous third anniversary rewards, Honkai: Star Rail Version 4.2 is shaping up to be one of the most content-heavy updates of the year when it launches April 22.
