HMD Global has officially commenced the deployment of the Android 14 update for its range of Nokia smartphones. This update follows in the footsteps of commitments from other manufacturers like Motorola, who have hinted at plans to bring their devices up to speed with Google’s latest operating system. However, while Motorola is yet to start updating its devices, HMD Global has taken the lead.
The company, however, has not released a comprehensive schedule for the update rollout. At the present moment, HMD Global has selectively started updating the Nokia G42 5G model, which had its debut last summer. Reports from Nokiapoweruser indicate that users in India are among the first to receive the update, which comes as an over-the-air (OTA) build and is notably sizable at 2.68 GB.
The Android 14 update is being rolled out under version number v2.160 to the Nokia G42 5G. Interestingly, the update package includes the December 2023 security patches rather than the more recent January updates issued by Google.
Even though HMD Global has not been vocal about the specific models slated for the Android 14 update, it is anticipated that other Nokia handsets like the Nokia G22, Nokia G60, Nokia X30, and the Nokia XR20—which is currently retailing for $499.99 on Amazon—will be eligible for the upgrade.
The move to update Nokia smartphones reaffirms HMD Global’s dedication to providing the latest software experience to its users, a commitment that positions it favorably among Android smartphone manufacturers.
The rollout of Android 14 to Nokia devices is anticipated to continue gradually, with further announcements expected to detail the phases and additional models included in the update plan. Nokia smartphone users can look forward to enhanced features, improved performance, and the latest security patches as the updates progress.
